World Series Game 6: "The Yankees are back on top, World Champions for the 27th time."
This
write up will be really simple. Hideki Matsui won the WS MVP and while
I think Mo was more deserving for his overall World Series performance,
you can't argue with what Godzilla did in the three games he played.
Especially tonight. 3-4, 6 RBI. He single-handedly beat the
Phillies. Then you have Andy Pettitte, who at 37 years old took the
mound on 3 days rest to close out our season in style. What a gamer.
There's no doubt in my mind he went out there knowing they were going
to win and that if the Phillies were going to stretch it to 7, they'd
have to bloody him first. I wanted at least 5 innings of 2-3 run ball
from him and that's what we got. That core group of players now has 5
rings....something I don't know we'll see for a while.
Also, allow me to say good showing to the Phillies. They made it tough and while some of the players ran their mouths off (gonna win in 5, eh Rollins?), they are a good team and they put up a good fight. When you can say you beat the defending champs to win the whole thing, that's great. So to all the Phillies fans that have posted here and read my blog over the last season, congrats to you. See you next year. :-)
For me though, the best part of all this was seeing Alex Rodriguez a World Series champion. I fought for him, I defended him, I dealt with a lot of crap from people because of him and I never turned my back on him. Never. I may have been angry at times, but I never walked away. And seeing him with that trophy.....I'm not afraid to admit I cried. I could not be prouder of him. He finally dumped the shackles of being called a "choker" and that the Yankees would never win a ring with him. He hit .365 this postseason, 6 HRs, 18 RBI....he carried the team to the World Series.....I'll never forget the image of him crying on the field when it was over. Thank you for being a Yankee, Alex. Thank you.

"Tell them, it wasn't easy. When they look back and see one-hundred fourteen wins, tell them we never took a single one for granted. Teach them about our passion and our patience. If they ask who was our star, give them twenty-five names. And if you forget our names, just tell them we were YANKEES. And in the season of our lives, we became a team. A team that made people believe that baseball could be magic, and men could be perfect."
Stars of the Game™

Wonderful win at home. Matsui really came through knocking in 6 of the seven runs this game and getting 8 hits in 13 at bats. This was crucial since most of our big guns were held in check. Pettitte pitched big again. Mo appeared to be on fumes but he gutted out 1.6 innings of work to end the game.
The only wish I had that did not come true was for Jimmy Rollins to make the last out -preferably a strike out.
But congrats to Yanks and their fans!

Congrats to the Yankees on another "PURCHASED" title. It just goes to show what money can buy...and it doesn't hurt all that much when the umpires give you every break throughout the playoffs as well.
By "purchasing" Tex, Burnett, Sabathia, they proved that they bought another ring like they have before. I love how players like A-Rod makes as much this season as the entire starting defensive lineup as a team like the Angels.
Yes, I said that correctly. The Angels starters:
1b Morales
2b Kendrick
ss Aybar
3b Figgins
Lf Rivera
Cf Hunter
Rf Abreu
P Saunders
All COMBINED make less than A-Roid alone.
How you New Yorkers can ignore these FACTS baffles me.
but hey, it was expected. ;]

And no, I didn't drink any HatorAde, New Yorkers tend to think the baseball world is out to "talk trash' because the Yankees win (or buy) wins...
Really it comes down to the fact that any non-Yankee fan... is a fan who appreciates the game. The Yankees torment the integrity of baseball by accumulating the nations collection of individual sellouts. If every team resulted in the purchase of players like NY... we'd have a repeat of the 1994 season
again...
and again...

Ryan,
If other teams had the money, they would do the same. In fact, some teams do have the money, but the owners are not willing to pay and rather pocket the profits at the turnstiles. Fact is A-Rod does make a heck of a lot of money, but he also draws fans to the ball game. His merchandise sells and brings in more revenue to the organization. And all of that is taken into consideration before signing a person to a big contract. I wonder how much merchandise sells for the Angel starters versus A-Rod? This is sad to say but baseball and all of professional sports is a business. The tickets have skyrocketed to astronomical prices; families these days can barely even afford a college football game. However, there seems to be others who are willing to shell out the $$$ for the seats. BTW, it is not only the Yankees who "buy" their players. Take a big look around the league and you will find just about ALL major league teams trying to get the best players they can afford. Any non-Yankee fan will agree to that statement.

What can i said.....300 millon dollars latter......off course they will win....imagine if teams like the Davil Rays, Marlins, or Rockies....with such a budget.....i think MLB has to make a salary contract limit a year...or we are going to see ALL STAR YANKEES vs Average Players in other teams....
I don´t know who else they´ll going to hire....maybe this year it will be...Albert Pujols, Itchiro and off course...Roy Halladay....
MLB commisioner needs to make adjudsments quickly or the league will be a mess like the NBA allready.....no body wants to see it...

Ten? Fifteen? Twenty? Wait, it cannot be ten, the Cards have won ten and no one truly bashes them.

Lol. You actually ARE a hater! The thing that cracks me up, your too stupid or too stubborn to see it. MONEY means NOTHING when it comes to the world series. IF it did, the postseason would include the top 8 highest payrolls. Yes, the Yankees have the highest payroll. I don't think that means they bought the series. And as for getting all the calls, you obviously are BLIND. There were an even number of calls to go against the Yankees, if not more for the other team. Sorry.
As for your comment infering that Yankee fans are not baseball fans, that's just ignorant. Sure, there are plenty of fans that wear the hats and can't name 6 starters, but there are WAY MORE Boston red sox fans who can't name 3. I LOVE baseball. I LOVE the Yankees. Does that mean I don't know the difference between a cutter and a sinker? I'll tell you what it does mean though: Through all the heartbreak, the low points, the homeruns, the double plays, and injuries, we're proud of our team. And as the rapper shawty low said "BIG UPS to all my HATERS!"

All i have to say is, congratulations to the Yankees. I knew that as soon as they beat the Angels :( that they would take it this year. I'm a die hard Angel fan and the honest truth is that the Yankees had the talent and the clutch hits when they needed it. No one can blame the bad calls by the umps because they went against the Angels has much as they went against the Yankees. And for the people crying about the Yankees salary, your just making yourself look bad. Lose with dignity.

Wow! Phillies played good - last year they beat the "one hit wonders" Tampa Bay Rays - but this year they ran into the NEW YORK YANKEES! Such a sweet victory - Thanks Philly for #27 !! You'll be back again, cause there are no teams in the National League - and once we pound out the Red Sox, Angels, Rangers, Tigers , Blue Jays and Twins again (which by the way, any one of those teams could beat the Phillies ) we'll be back for 28, if your game :)

No, Ichiro just signed a 5-year deal in 2007. With players like Gardner and Cabrera the Yanks do not need him. Besides, we have a good lead off hitter in Jeter. He may not have as high a BA, but he does have a better OBP, slugging average, and produces more runs. As for Pujols, he too is in the middle of a seven year deal. Besides, we have Tex at first. Pujols is better offensively, but Tex hits well too. Tex is also much better in the field -even though both are GG winners. As for Halladay, no one knows. If Wang can return to his previous level of effectiveness, there should be no real need for Halladay. As for Pettitte returning, that's a big question mark. Besides, the Jays would want an ace starter NOW along with other compensation. The Yankees still have Chamberlain as a developmental project and Hughes.

First of all, Ryan, f*ck you. Really. F*ck. You. Now, and in the hereafter, you bitter miscreant.
Second and most importantly, Beth, we went through so much of this season together. Fully earned and well appreciated, the Yanks rest atop the baseball world! #27 is right there with the others in its historic greatness and joy. No one, not any vacuous haters or other parasites can deprive us of this. Enjoy. We must discuss this further.

cartwrightrocks,
My feelings exactly about how much money is spent on players.
Tell this to those Morons that own the Cleveland indians.
To this day I can not figure out how you take a Championship Caliber Team such as Cleveland was in 2007 and completely rip it a part. These people have no business owning a major league franchise. Now if he wants to go and buy a minor league franchise
this will fit his business plan better. If you want people in seats then field a competitive team. The 455 straight sell outs in Cleveland, the Dolan's will never see. They have set Cleveland baseball back over 40 years. It's time for them to sell the team.
As you can see I am a Cleveland fan, but the congrats go to the Yankees this year. One more thing (Pay attention Dolan's you will learn something)it's not really how much these Yankee players make that makes them Champions this year, and contenders almost every year, The yankees play good fundamental baseball, and cash in on the oppositions mistakes.
Let me also say this about the 2004 ALCS, for Boston to take out the Yankees up 3to 0, in 4 straight, I don't buy it.

It's another sad day in baseball when the team that buys the commissioners rule book and spends above the salary cap, that was put in there to make it fair for all teams, has claimed another untainted series win. Don't believe it for a second folks. The Yankees have the commissioner on their payroll too. Why can't the Yankees play within the rules? I guess it's ok for the Yankees to cheat as long as they win..isn't that correct Bud? The Yankees have such a gathering of great players that it is impossible for them to play fairly in MLB. They need to create a league of their own so they can play other teams with the same salary cap as them. The Yankees could NEVER win a championship by playing within the rules .. NEVER!!!! I hope you sleep well at night commissioner. You're the one people count on to make things fair in baseball. How does that pocket full of Yankee cash feel?

There is mostly congrats to the Yankees and Yankee haters on this blog. What should be said to Mr. Steinbrenner, a job well done putting together this group of great players. Their talents have given the NY Yankees another championship season.
Now if those bumbling owners in Cleveland would just take note then just maybe the Indians would be back in contention. I myself enjoy a good rivalry between two teams such as the Yankees vs Indians. I love it when the Yanks take it to Boston also. Boston has gotten to big for it's britches and they needed trimmed down a bit.
I am not a Yankees fan by no means, but recognition of their accomplishments is in order. A rematch next year between NY and the Phillies would be great, but first both teams have to earn their way back again, and that is no sure thing by any means.
I just had a thought about this years final standings in the American Central Division, did the Indians owners try to get Cleveland to finish dead last in the Central by trading away what good player'$ they had, and announce the firing of the manager before season's end? As it turned out Cleveland and KC tied for last place, maybe these un-named owners thought they could get a playoff game to see who would finish last.

jolis492@yahoo.com ??? I guess you are a socialist and want equal distribution throughout the world so we can have "fairness"? But just as Limbaugh recently stated in an interview "you are worth whatever someone is willing to pay you as they pay you in order to create even more wealth and better lives for all". There is no such thing in any occupation as "so and so is not worth it". The players the Yankees signed generate more revenue for the team and local economies then they are paid period. They bring more gate receipts throughout the major leagues and frankly i reject this class envy argument against achievers it is purely Marxist.
The Yankees have failed over and over with free agents and you can not just "purchase" a Championship it takes much more then money but if you generate money you should reinvest it just as Drug Companies, and oil companies do despite the class envy that is taught by the mainstream media.
Last night was sweet as 2001 and 2003 were so hard to take and then those failing years afterward with all the bum signings and heartbreak. I wanted Giradi all along and feel he is a good manager and did a great job. The 3 Day rest talk all over the sports world was like a media template they just kept it up and kept it up. Never looking at History and understanding that it has been common through baseball History. Koufax threw Shutouts on 2 days rest.
Matsui deserved the MVP no doubt. He played in all 6 games not 3 and produced as a PH in Philadelphia. I detest the DH (i still wonder if Ted Williams would of played until death if they had it) and always will but it is there and he was most valuable no doubt. It was a great moment seeing him get that trophy and like Jeter he is on everyone's favorite Yankee list. I love Mo but I still can't buy the fact that a guy throwing to a few batters should obtain so much glory. I long for the complete game pitcher like the older days. Goosage and Lyle were Relief pitchers they came in when you needed them and went 3-4 innings whatever was needed. The "Save" is an overrated stat.
Being a Baseball fan is special as it is a game like no other that is part of your soul. Being a Yankee fan is even more special living through what I have and hearing my Dad's recollections of going to afternoon games in the Bronx was part of growing up. I can understand Yankee Chics emotions and never forgot the joy I saw in my Dad when McCovey lined out to Bobby Richardson in 1962. From that moment I wanted whatever joy my Father felt and was hooked. Last night we felt it again!

The Yankees did it again. The Yankees in the early years deserve all the praise in the world. Today, not so much. For those who call us Yankee Haters, Thank You!!! I do hate the Yankees and all they stand for. I don't hate the fact that they win or that they spend money like it's water. I hate the fact that you accept A-Rod and Pettitte for their drug use. I hate the fact that you don't acknowledge the fact that other teams are not on an equal playing field finacially. You think that the Yankees won because they happened to be a team of destiny rich in history. I wish that were true. This way other teams could do it to. All other teams can not keep up with the deep pockets of the Yankees. Yankee fans step up and call it like it is. We won because we know how to spend money and we don't care who we hire to do it. Hit the ball, run the bases and pitch like a fein. It doen't matter how you do it. We will reward you for it. Nobody challanges the fact that you have the best team. But it is almost entirely bought. I hate free agency. It has made baseball what it is today. Spend, spend, spend. This is why the hard working class can not afford to take their family to a game anymore. The Yankees and their fans are part of the reason why baseball is fading as America's pastime. We accept the higher ticket prices. If you noticed the stands at the new Mega-Yankee stadium, there were a lot of empty seats. Not even the great Yankees can fill seats at those prices. The beginning of the end.
No matter what you say Yank-mees is funny.

Jason. I agree we should keep it to baseball. However, capitalism is relevant in the discussion because it is defending the American freedoms that makes it possible for all of us to achieve what we desire weather it is a World Championship or being the king of the Media.

Baseball is very popular and although the government take over of the private sector has created challenging economic times attendance and revenues are still very good throughout the game, which has grown in my lifetime to heights not ever imagined. Yes, ticket prices are high but the market creates pricing, salaries etc. If the Yankees are charging too much and fans don't buy seats then the market will fix the problem not any bureaucrat who wants "fairness" The Yankees have always had haters that is OK.

The abject illiteracy of the Yankee haters here astounds me. As if being lowly haters were not enough, the poorly contrived vitriol is almost impressive in its feeble desperation.
You all get the index fingers. The Yankees are #1.

//Yes Andy was on the Roids, and that disapoints me. Yes Arod was also. Again disgusted, but due to drug testing now, they aren't anymore. May I also remind everyone there were a hundred other players on that list. They couldn't have all played for the Yankees. Think about that before you start running your mouth. Your favorite team might have some disapointing news.//
Like that will change their opinions. It's absolutely disappointing that Alex and Andy were on the list, but it's the past and that is over now. Time to move on. Manny Ramirez got popped twice, David Ortiz is on the list, not to mention about 100 others and probably more that never got caught. To think it's just a Yankees problem is to ignore the bigger issue - it's a BASEBALL problem. We are not baseball, we are one of 30 teams.
Like I said, Yankee Haters make me laugh.

All the whining about the Yankees dough--how about this: The Yankees subsidize weak franchises that would otherwise go out of business (like the freakin' Marlins whose entire profit is due to Yankees cash). The Yanks and a few other teams are the *only* reason that MLB has 30 teams. If you want to talk contraction, then we can discuss salary caps and all other money issues. But before you whine ask yourself whether you want MLB with 20 teams.
Those correlating championships entirely with money simply don't know the game and need not be taken seriously. Money can buy enough talent to make sure you don't suck--though the Mets somehow manage that--but it cannot guarantee championships. If that's the case, the Yankees would have just won their tenth in a row, not their first in nine years. Look at the facts; don't just spout the cliche of the day.

Redsox I believe have the highest ticket prices. Also, the yanks play fundamental baseball. Sure, they have the money, but some of their highest contributors started here. Melky, cano, jeter, Rivera. Yes Andy was on the Roids, and that disapoints me. Yes Arod was also. Again disgusted, but due to drug testing now, they aren't anymore. May I also remind everyone there were a hundred other players on that list. They couldn't have all played for the Yankees. Think about that before you start running your mouth. Your favorite team might have some disapointing news. It's a kids game, and it sucks how much money they make, but keep in mind how much money they give back.
Yanks win, if the phillies won you retards would be saying "money can't buy championships!" lol

The various responses to all the whining about the Yankees and "buying championships" are good. I understand the difficulties that smaller markets endure. But to simply point the finger at the Yankees--and many other big-market teams--is to ignore a complex set of relationships between players, markets, teams, and fans. The Yankees and other bigger market teams considerably subsidize small-market teams through revenue sharing, much of which does NOT get invested in salaries for obtaining and retaining players. Some fans seem to consider it natural that teams routinely shed players when their contracts are up, or trade them away. Toronto, for example, has done this with Rios, Burnett, and may well with Halliday despite the fact that Toronto is a large metropolitan area, and used to fill the seats with 4 million fans a year--when they used to acquire and keep good players.
There are problems with the system as it stands, but let's be realistic--would small-market teams want systems that exist in the other sports of football, basketball, and hockey that have team salary minimums that stipulate spending near a league average on player payroll? Hardly. Now, there are no requirements for baseball teams to reinvest money from revenue sharing and television contracts--and we're talking tens of millions of dollars annually for Florida, Pittsburgh and the like--and they don't resulting in poor quality of baseball and few fans in these cities. There is often a direct correlation between a lack of investments and not just poor results, but poor attendance, which exacerbates the cycle of their teams' failures by depriving them of revenue through attendance.
It is far more than simply a matter of the Yankees doing what they can under the system as it stands--and I have considerable problems with the Yanks getting tax giveaways for their new Stadium; very unnecessary, and the money should have been spent on far better and more socially useful things. It is also a matter of plenty of teams not doing what they can to field competitive teams. That should receive far more attention that it does, especially from the contingent of peevish, sniveling fans posting their abject complaints here instead of congratulations.

Which is why I completely ignore people complaining about payroll. All these smaller-market teams who get millions and millions of dollars from the Yankees every year, yet do nothing with that money to put a quality product on the field....they are the problem. I'm sick and tired of being blamed for everyone else's failure to compete.

There have been some great non-Yankees fans who have posted here/read over the season and have posted their congrats and I thank them for that. It probably isn't easy to say "good job" to the fans of a team you hate. So I give them props for being classy and adult enough to post without being an idiot.

Oh how I do enjoy the hatred that comes out for my/your/our Yankees! Everybody has such strong feelings about this, I'm just glad that I'm on the fan side. Plus, I really do consider it a compliment that ALL OF YOU HATERS would go out of your way just to try and ruin an experience that we've now enjoyed 27 times. Especially since their favorite team has won it, at least, 17 times less than the Yankees have. Knowing that our victory is making your life miserable makes me even happier that the New York Yankees are world champions yet again.
Now, on to bigger and better conversation: the post-game celebrations. I agree with you Beth, when you said it was great to see Alex with the trophy. The looks on Mo and Jorge's faces after the final out were priceless. Sort of a "my God, we've done it again!" look. Plus, how great was it that Girardi looked like a 12 year old kid again? His vindication as manager here was what he was holding up...not just a trophy. Oh, and with all the great players cementing themselves in baseball history by winning a world series for the first time...I'm glad our franchise was the one that could bring these champions their due.
Somehow though, as I was watching these celebrations unfold, I got an image stuck in my head. I imagined that somewhere in a mansion in Tampa, there was a man, sitting up in his bed with the lights off and the TV on, watching a team over 1,000 miles away. His team. Smiling, but with a tear of joy running down his cheek. THAT image right there is what made #27 so sweet for me. Thanks for everything, Boss.
Yankees then. Yankees now. Yankees forever.

There is nothing better than a miserable Yankee Hater. Knowing their happiness is tied to what WE do makes me so happy. I hate the Red Sox, what Yankees fan doesn't, but I'm not a Red Sox Hater. That's not what takes up my time. The Red Sox losing is not more enjoyable to me than the Yankees winning. For these people, the Yankees consume all their thoughts. Whether we win or we lose, they feel something about it. More than they do for their own team. How pathetic.
//I agree with you Beth, when you said it was great to see Alex with the trophy. //
For me, seeing Alex with that trophy made my night. I'm so, so, SO happy for him. Most of his problems are self-inflicted but he overcame them and carried this team to a championship. I couldn't have asked for a better ending to this season for him.

Oh yeah. It was sad that George couldn't be there, but with his failing health, I wasn't surprised. I'm glad that we could win this for him, I keep hearing rumors that he's not going to be around that much longer so if in fact does pass away before next season's playoffs, I'm glad he got see one more.

What can be said that hasn't been said already? The Yankees bought another championship, that's pretty obvious. Any Yankees fan that isn't willing to admit that money was a huge factor should revoke their rights as a baseball fan (as it goes with most baseball teams but the Yankees are clearly the worst in this case, as they havebeen for quite some time). I will congratulate Joe Girardi, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada (as I like them and knowing that they are receiving part of this championship makes me feel a little better), but most of the others I could care less about (especially Nick Swisher). However, the worst culprit is the fan base because the majority of Yankee fans are selfish and ignorant (as are Red Sox fans but this post is directed towards New York so I'll keep it that way). People who assume a DAY after the WS win that #28 is on its way need to shut the f*ck up. Just because they are the Yankees doesn't make them any more special than any other team. Last time I checked, your team hasn't won a championship in almost 10 years prior to yesterday so this trash talk is completely childish and unnecessary. Arrogant Yankee fans (only the arrogant ones because I know plenty who are not and for that, I respect them), cherish what you have now and keep your mouths shut. I'm sure you're as much of an embarrassment to the loyal Yankee fans as bandwagon Red Sox fans are to the real ones.
For the real Yankee fans who don't find the need to post garbage and act like @ssholes, congratulations. The Yankees were clearly the best team this year.

Jealousy is such a terrible thing. Owners (clubs) who take money from the Yankees and put it into their own pockets; clubs who spend money on `players who dont produce (METS) and yes the Yankees have had their share too; and whining about not winning. Tell me again about the Angels bidding for Tex (who didnt want left coast baseball), about Lackey and Figgins who will be leaving angels for a payday, about fillies and getting Lee (who was the only reason fillie won what they did)....Look at the core Yankees and how they performed in the series; Jeter, Posada, Pettitte and Mariano...The universe is now in order....Go Yanks!!!

Yes, the alternative should be to not spend money on payroll, to gobble up revenue sharing dollars and media revenues by the tens of millions and hoard it, like the Pirates and Marlins do--teams interested in neither winning nor putting fans in the seats. Yes, those (profitable) teams are poor and lose because of the Yankees, who are rich--they alone. Sure. Every good team does it and that's what ruins the damn game. That's why teams like Pittsburgh, Washington, KC, etc are bottom-of-the-barrel every year because they are forced to compete with juggernauts with bottomless pockets, and they just can't keep up. You're seriously going to deny this? F*ck off dude.

You fail to realize, you don't get to decided who deserves what. If you're a Yankees fan, whether it's for 1 year or 100 years, you deserve to be happy about what your team has done. No one, myself included, is qualified to determine what groups of Yankees fans are worthy of your time and which are not. If you can't congratulate everyone, congratulate no one. At least here. If you want to do your part and parcel routine elsewhere, go right on ahead.

Really? There's been quite a few teams over the last I'd say 5 or 6 seasons with very high payrolls that have not won it every year, the Yankees included. So exactly how are you so sure about that? The playoffs are a crap-shoot and money has very little to do with whether you win or not. We've seen that many times already. It's what you do with what you have. If you spend a lot of money and nothing works, you won't win. If you spend very little money and everything works, you'll win.
Winning the World Series is dependent on beating the other team - money can't always help you do that.

It's called capitalism. Baseball is a business, just like McDonalds is a business and Target is a business and Wachovia is a business. The whole point is to make money. You make money by getting people to spend THEIR money and one good way to do that is by putting a team on the field fans will pay money to see and support. That includes tickets and merchandising. I'm not a hater of the Yankees but watching them win is like watching Hulk Hogan win. It's a rigged competition. Envision if you will, Yankee fans, if Michael Phelps was given a 20 meter head start in the pool or if Usama Bolt was given a 20 meter head start on the track. Would you call that a fair competition? I don't ever want to hear the owners use the 'integrity' word until they fix the money word. Hey Yankee fans, how would you like to be a baseball fan in Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Seattle, KC, Oakland, Dallas, etc, etc, knowing in April that you have no chance of watching your team in November? Look no further than Cleveland - 14 months ago they had both CC and C Lee. Maybe all these other teams should start their own league and leave the Yankees to playing the Red Sox every day.

You sir, are a moron.

My goodness, johnrh, you are pathetic. First, your grammar is an affront to the English language. Try some punctuation next time--capital letters, apostrophes, capitalization, periods, proper spelling. "A bought bunch of frunt runners?" What on earth does that gibberish even mean? Ahh, you would like the Yankees if they didn't win? So, did you like the Yankees in the previous eight years, when they didn't win the Series? What do other teams do? Pay their players in hugs and kisses? Give it a stinking rest already. You're embarrassing yourself.

That's right it does. It says that more than half their active roster were NOT paid mercenaries or free agents brought in. They were products of the farm system that we cultivated over time. That's pretty damn impressive in THIS day and age, whether you want to think so or not. Now please continue to embarrass yourself, you're making all my readers laugh.

That's right. Most anyone knows what the word "champions" means. So I agree - good English is not a requirement to know what the Yankees are today. They're better than YOUR team, that's something else we know.

Congratulations to the Yankees - a most deserving World Series Champion!!! Some highlights for me: watching Pettite be so competitive at this stage of his career, Matsui hitting an unbelievable .615 in the World Series -- did I see that right? .615! that's gotta be a record, no? -- and Mo (my favourite player) with ice in his veins in wining another one. We witnessed an all-star Hall of Fame line-up win. I feel lucky to be around to witness it.

I don't know if it's a record, but it's really high. He did tie the record for most RBIs in a single World Series game, which is great.

The day Mo retires, there will be tears. Oh yes, there will be tears.

Ok, where to start...Guess I'll start at the beginning...;
Joe Buck and Fox. I HATE that station. TBS was much better.
I knew the Yankees would win when Rollins and another team mate predicted they would win 5 or 6 games. The golden #1 rule in sports is, don't give your opponent an more incidentive that they already have. I did predict 6 games, of course, I picked the yankees. :)
I was pleasantly surprised that they were able to shut down Howard so easily. Even though it went 6 games, it was a tough series, just like we all expected to be.
Now, as for the yankee haters, well, they are all over the place, this blog, other blogs, etc. It's always the same too. They'll make sarcastic remarks when yankees lose and if they win, then they'll make the ole "Bought the championship" arguement. Pretty funny, they sound like a broken record. They don't seem to understand, or maybe they just don't want to see the truth, that other teams, well, MOST other teams do not invest the money into their team as the yankees do. If they truely keep up to date with other teams over the last few years. They would see that a couple of players in different teams have complained that their team has money but are not investing. Hmm...some teams like Boston and Mets are investing their money into their team, but there other teams that has money but are not investing for some reason. There are even a couple of owners like NFL Oakland's owner that doesn't deserve to own a team.
Next, which I always laugh at. They always say "fans outside of NY doesn't care about the yankees. Hmm...if that is true, I guess tons of fans makes trips with the team all over the country. I mean, everywhere the Yankees gone, their opponent's park either sells out or has 2 or 3 times more people than usual. PLUS, there are tons of fans cheering for the yankees as well. Some parks, even far as the opposite coast has between a quarter or half of the fans cheering for the yankees. Ah well, the haters will never stop and they'll have the same old arguements no matter what.
One last thing. I am concerned about next season. There is a good possibility that they will resign Andy if he wants to come back. Damon and Matsui are my concern. Word is, they might bring one of them back but not both. HUGE mistake. Damon, if they let him go, WHO are they going to have at the top of the lineup that can make things happen? No one, Cano maybe able to handle the 2nd slot but he has no experience on the basepaths or the at bats. Yeah, he has less than average arm in the outfield and needs a day off here and there but the man has experience and can create things at the top of the lineup. Then there is Matsui. They want to rotate the DH with bench players and then give a starter an occasional half day off here and there. Not a good idea. Other teams have tried that and none been successful. DH is NOT like being a PH for 4 at bats. There has been many DHs in the past but not many been successful. I been watching baseball since the 70's and the DHs that comes to my mind at the moment is Edgar martinze that used to play for Seattle. Probably the most consistant DH ever. Paul Monitor is another and then perhaps Reggie Jackson during his later years. DH doesn't hard but for many players, just sitting on the bench and not doing anything while your team is on the field is tough. Plus they are sitting when their team is at bat, waiting their turn. Not easy. Giambi always said he hits better when he plays on the field, more comfortable. Which is why I said "and perhaps Reggie Jackson in his later years" because his production dropped considerably when he went to DH full time. Matsui is one of the rare players that can hit with consistancy and hit well off the bench. The man had 90 RBIs this season and he didn't play a full season, otherwise he would have had another 100 RBIs. The lineup NEEDS both Damon and Matsui.
Now, they do need to add one more stable starter. Not sure but I think Doc Holladay is a free agent. They need to get him. Wang is questionable and Job is best at the bullpen. His first return at the bullpen wasn't great, but after that, he was almost back to his old self from couple of seasons ago. Yeah, gave up a homer but he still looked dominating. Then there is Hughes and Gaudin. Those two and Wang can fight for the 5th spot during spring training.

i said they buy players so that no one else would sign them. like how they offered c.c. 161mm when nobody else offered him anything. that's buying players. i don't mind that they buy players. i just like seeing that they lose while they do it.

I'm really going to miss seeing the 2009 Yankees play, because they were so much fun to watch this season. There was such chemistry and camaraderie, and they were having so much fun!
In fact, that's why they won. They played as a team, had each other's backs, and had confidence in each other. That's why they were never out of a game and had so many late inning comeback wins and walk-offs.
This season has been a blast!
Beth, what a great blog! And it is amazing (and enjoyable) to experience all of the pathetic blather from the Yankee haters.
The 2009 Yankees are truly the best!

Yankee fans selfishly want to fool themselves into thinking that money is not the issue.......but, unfortunately, it is. Sure, the luxury tax does contribute to smaller market teams, but not enough to level the playing field. The Yanks are the only team in MLB that can stock their roster with a dozen or more high priced free agents, and when a few don't work out they are jettisoned and replaced with more high priced free agents. Keep in mind the Jeter, Riviera, etc would be free agents if they played anywhere but NY. When was the last time a high profile player LEFT the Yankees due to free agency? Never, and the reason is cash. Look Yankee fans, baseball is not a normal business where the the object of business A is to put all of their competitors out of business. Like it or not, the Yanks NEED the Royals, A's etc. Look at the Milw Brewers, they have spent years grooming Fielder and Braun, quite possibly the best, young #3/4 hitting combo in baseball. But the Brewers will never be able to afford the pitching necessary to compete for a WS. Remember they had Sabbathia. So in a few years when those two contracts are up, they will trade both of them to a contender at the All-Star break so they can recoup something for their investment. It makes for a lousy game for everyone except Yankee fans.

There was a time in pro sports when profits was not the only objective. Extremely wealthy men used sports teams as one of their toys. Cash is king now. Here's what sports fans across the country have to look forward to in the future.....Yankees in the WS almost every year, where they will always be the favorite, even if they don't always win. Same story with the Lakers in basketball. And now that Jerry has that new stadium in Dallas, he'll circumvent the spirit of the agreements and do the same with the Cowboys in football. Excuse me while I scratch my ash and yawn. Think I'll turn the tube off and help my wife wallpaper the bathroom.

People. Enough with the "high priced teams will always win" argument. The results just do not support this argument at all. Sure, a higher payroll gives you a better shot than a really low payroll, but the highest payrolls do not always make the playoffs let alone win the WS. The reason is the lack of a relationship between cost of talent and performance of the team as a whole. Then you can throw in injuries during the season, which further confounds any relationship between team price and performance. You can buy all of the high priced talent you want (and the Yankees do), but you can't always form that talent into a winning team. This year they did. Team building, and keeping a team healthy and producing, is far tougher than just buying the talent. So lets not demean what the Yankees accomplished this year. That the Yankee haters dismiss the accomplishments of the 2009 Yankees just demonstrates how little they really understand about great baseball teams.

maybe next year when MLB makes a rule limiting how many times you can have a talk at the mound Yankees wont be able to cheat to get their bull pen ready. Visiting the mound 19 times in one inning, seriously?

The Players performed, met expectations, and the Yankees flat out WON the world series. Can't argue that, so I won't.
MLB needs a salary cap. Every once in a blue moon you'll get the Rays (just getting in) or the Marlins to sneak one out, but year in and year out 80% of the league is NOT going to win the world series due to their inability to add depth behind the only players they CAN pay for.
Seriously, the fact that a $150 million dollar salary cap could create an argument from Yankee fans speaks loudly about the clear advantage that a team in the #1 media market in the world knows it has over an entire sport.
This shouldn't be the case folks, players should get paid, but it would be great for there to be a little more excitement in a free agents' choice of teams. When the team you want to go to is off by $60 million dollars from the highest bid, there's NO WAY you're ever going to go to any team other than the highest bidder.
If the Yankees want to keep paying as much as they do, then they should get out of the league and become a traveling team like the Harlem Globtrotters so MLB can become a legitimate league again.

I don't remember who it is from, but the original quote came after the 1998 season. I merely changed the "one hundred twenty-five" to "one hundred fourteen" to reflect how many total wins we had this season. I got the quote at Baseball Almanac on the page for the 1998 World Series.

MLB is a legitimate league, you nincompoop. Just because you don't like how much the Yankees spend....that doesn't change anything. We're going to spend however much we need to in order to put quality teams on the field every year. If you don't like that....don't watch. No one is forcing you to be a baseball fan.

I cant believe how either blind or stupid you Yankees fans are. No, other teams do not have the revenues to spend on players. The next closest team in payroll is over 60 million less than your beloved yankee scumbags. This World Series will always have an asterisk beside it due to the fact that you bought Sabathia and Teixeira last year to get to the World Series. Tell me, where would you be without those two? Now just go out and buy Lackey and Jason Bay this off season and tell yourselves again next year how awesome you are. (Im sure A ROID could help you with that)

I Just Don't Get U Haters.... u say that Yankkes winning championship is sad because we bough the players... but, your team making tons of money w tickets and jerseys and all the promotion merchandise and your team's owner and manager flying in a brand mew private plane and drinking pina colada in bahamas, touristing at the louvre in paris and your team loosing for years, and the fans crying and hating the champs, that's really really sad!!!! lmfao..
What the f*ck shud Yankees do??? earn tons of millions and keep loosing even if they know that the were not working right?? they had to do something!! so they though they needed Teixeira and Sabathia and they saw the billionaire bank account and bingoooo! we won the 2009 World Series!!!!!! what would Jesus do?? what would your team do?? what would u all fu*cking haters do?? I think Phillies would have done the same thing, and they probably would have won the series and u'll be crying, celebrating and drinkin campagne and yellin' ''we are champs''!!!!
It's not because Yankees are a such a great team (and you know Jeter, Matsui, Pettitte, A-Rod and all the old ones rocks!!!!) it's all because u didnt win!!!

Wow, it's crazy to see all these people say they hate the Yanks just because they spend money to get an outstanding group of players together and win the World Series. Isnt that the whole goal? It's not like the Yankees have broken any rules by spending so much money. I would rather see them spend money on high dollar players than hord it all. Plus, we have a new stadium that they forked out a gillion dollars on which is great for the fans. If so many people hate the Yanks, then why are they the top selling merchandise team in MLB? It was a great post season and lets enjoy this one for a while, or at least until spring training. Congrats to the Yankees.

//If so many people hate the Yanks, then why are they the top selling merchandise team in MLB? //
Well, to be honest the Yankee logo is a marketable one, even to people who don't follow baseball. I mean, a friend of mine vacationed in London a couple of years ago and saw a lot of Yankee gear over there - England isn't exactly known for its baseball interest. They're more into football (soccer) over there. If anything, the fact we're the top merchandising team in the majors speaks more to the fact that the logo and the team are easily identifiable and easily marketed. It's cool to own Yankees gear, even if you're not a die-hard fan.
People hate the Yankees because they're successful and talented athletes will take huge sums of money to play here. Simple as that. We have the big names, we have the talent and their team doesn't. That will cause the haters to flock. It's beautiful.
