Derek Jeter is SI's Sportsman of the Year.
I'm sure some people will bitch that a Yankee won it and there was someone somewhere who deserved it more, but they can just be quiet. This is our year, maybe next year someone from your team will do something worth honoring. Also, a Yankee has never won this until now. So it's not like we've had a run of these and oh gee, another Yankee got it. Mantle never won it, Maris never won it, Guidry never won it....all had great, damn near historic seasons as Yankees.
I gotta say I love the picture - very iconic. You got Derek, the uniform, a subway stop for Yankee Stadium....all that's missing is the Empire State Building in the background and a hot dog cart. Throw in a cab and you have New York City in one picture. Makes me jealous I'm not a New Yorker. I've been told I'm an honorary New Yorker, so I guess that'll have to do. LOL

he deserves it. a great guy and an even harder worker on the field. he is the face of the yankees and really the face of baseball

i LUV this picture!!! gotta go out and get this magazine tomorrow! i'm so ecstatic that he won =) as my husband said, jeter is just so squeaky clean - he's the perfect picture face of the yankees being represented on a representative year for him and the yankees. AWESOME!!!
beth, you're definitely an honorary new yorker - for sure! since i am a new yorker, i'm able to make that statement =)

Cool Pic! Would be nice to get his signature on it.........then again, I'll have to keep it under lock and key and more than likely will not be able to enjoy it myself. Congrats to Jeter for an outstanding year.

Oh I agree.....something like that would definitely look good signed and framed. An art piece, if you will.

Thank you. Coming from a New Yorker, that's definitely a high compliment and I will wear it with pride. One day, I'm moving to NY and then I can say I am a New Yorker for real!
