World Series News Brief - Phillies announce next two starters.

So Charlie Manuel decided to take a page from I don't know whom and throw us all a big, fat loop.

Joe Blanton will be starting Game 4, with Cliff Lee pitching Game 5.  I know what you're thinking......WTF?!  I was thinking that too.  See, we're pitching CC Sabathia in Game 4 on 3 days rest.  So that means he's going up against Joe Blanton.  Who is not, and never will be, Cliff Lee.  Apparently Lee threw just a teeny, tiny bit too many pitches during Game 1 and won't be available on 3 days rest.  This would be like Girardi starting Joba Chamberlain in Game 4 rather than CC Sabathia.  Is there a Yankees fan alive who would defend that?  Probably not.

So yeah, here's what the match-ups look like for the near future:

Game 3: Pettitte vs. Hamels
Game 4: Sabathia vs. Blanton
Game 5: TBA vs. Lee

I like our chances in the next two games.

Yep, hard to see Blanton match Sabathia inning-for-inning in that game, but crazier things have happened.

On paper the next two games favor us. On paper. If we play as well on the field as the match-ups suggest we should, I'll be very happy.

i like how you stressed ON PAPER that the next 2 games favor us. since we all know sometimes it's the games that ON PAPER looks one way that ends up throwing us for a loop - which end up being the most irritating of all games!
so my big question is this (since i don't know any of these phillies pitchers) - have the yankees faced these pitchers before? (either earlier in the year or in the past when they were on other teams) because for some reason, the yankees struggled this year when facing a pitcher for the 1st time, they made them look like cy youngs! i hope that's not the case...
we're coming into today game following what was AJ's best & biggest performance as a yankee with the 2 most dominant dependable, deliverable pitchers we have - we have to take the next 2 games!!! let's go yankees!!!
btw- yesterday, someone at my workplace dressed up as a phillies fan for halloween, and got booed. boo~~~!!!

Yeah, sometimes our biggest problem is capitalizing on match-ups that favor us. Pettitte/Hamels and Sabathia/Blanton should be wins for the Yankees. I mean, we can win those games. Obviously whether we do or not is up to the guys. However our pitching in those games is better than theirs. We just need to hit the damn ball.

We've faced Blanton quite a bit when he was in Oakland, and he has an 8+ ERA against us. Hamels we faced earlier this season I believe, and Cliff Lee we faced quite a bit when he was in Cleveland. And Pedro well......we all know how many times we've seen that guy.

We need 2 of 3. If we had won Game 1 as well, 1 of 3 would be sufficient. But we need tonight's game and tomorrow's game since Game 5 will be solely contingent on what we do tonight and tomorrow. That is, whether Girardi pitches AJ on short rest or goes with Gaudin [which if we're up 3-1 would be criminally stupid on his part - if you have a chance to clinch, you do it].

CC vs. Blanton in Game 4 = 3-1 Yanks lead!!!

Don't call it until the game is over. Anything can happen.

//Well, tonight's game worked out well. Pettitte made me very nervous in the second inning, but it all worked out in the end! Shelley//

Hey Shelley! Great to see you over here. I agree it worked out well and Andy's veteran wile helped really seal the deal - that was HUGE.
