World Series Game 2: Not so fast, Pedro.
Thank God. So at least one positive we can take away from this is that we will not get swept. So Yankee Haters™ can check that off their Christmas wish lists. I'd be lying if I said that after last night's game, I wouldn't be watching this one with trepidation. It's not that I don't have faith in my boys, because I do. It's just that sometimes my nerves get the best of me and override my common sense. Thanks in part to this sorely needed victory, our Magic Number drops down one spot to 3.
AJ Burnett was our starter tonight and truth be told, he's been more than solid this postseason. Our offense though, never gave him much to speak of, so he hadn't recorded a win before tonight. With the whole of Yankees Nation with their collective stomachs in their throats.......AJ proceeded to crap all over Philadelphia and it was truly marvelous. 7 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 9 K. He was sick nasty filthy dirty. When we signed him, this is what we were expecting. Mo came in for the 2-inning save, did his job. Yankees win. Hallelujah.
Our offense is still dead or presumed dead anyhow, but fortunately we were able scrape up 3 runs from the bottom of some barrel somewhere and slap them up on the board. Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely overjoyed that we won this, it's just that I'm not exactly sitting at 100% on the confidence scale right now. Pedro Martinez, while dominating back in the late 90s......is not that Pedro anymore. He's a shell of the guy Boston shoved up our a$ses all the time. He was throwing 88 mph and we were swinging through it. If there's anything I DON'T like, it's making mediocre pitchers look like Cy Young and God knows we've done it enough. Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui got our offense off the ground with a couple of solo shots that tied the game and then gave us a lead, and Jorge Posada got a single in the 7th to give us a little extra insurance. I hope we come out strong on Saturday because frankly.....another game of this and I'll go bald from pulling my hair out.

//that was an AWESOME, dominant, masterpiece of a pitching performance by AJ! not only did he pitch well and well enough for us to win, but today i didn't get any uncertainty or unsteady feeling that things can blow up any minute (which sometimes i feel when AJ pitches) from the way he was pitching.//
I agree, sometimes when AJ pitches I can either be so full of nerves my stomach is upset or so completely calm, I'm almost comatose.
//i really wanted to be able to go to this game but my hubby had parent-teacher-conferences... boo. but my friend from work was there tonight. when i heard she was going, i asked her to be our good luck charm - what i really wanted to ask was for her to wear my lucky purple socks, but i didn't think it was something she'd go for. lol! //
Hop on the train, get on the turnpike....there's three games in the city of Brotherly Hate that need your presence, missy. And bring those socks.

From your keyboard to their bats. If we can win the Andy/Hamels match-up and the CC/Lee match-up, I think we'll be good. We need to win at least one of CC's starts if it doesn't go 7.

For the first few innings, I thought this would be a repeat of game 1. Fortunately, Pedro cracked and made a couple of costly mistakes. We were able to capitalize on them. The hitting has been "masterless" for a good portion of this post season. Seeing A-Rod without a hit these first two games makes me think he is pressing and putting the same pressure on himself as he did in years past. I hope Swish and AJ can help him lighten up and relax. This is his first WS game so I can understand the desire. This is the closest he has been to winning it all.
On a plus note, Burnett has awesome. That curve was nasty and the movement on his fastball was electric. The worrisome thought is Girardi's confidence in his bridge to Rivera -which at this time is ZERO. I cannot blame him, but Rivera will not be able to do this every game, I hope for some convincing wins in Philly -hopefully three wins.
A couple of plays irked me -the first being the double play involving Johnny Damon. I swear I saw the dust kick up from the ground as the ball hopped into Howard's glove he was even moving toward first after short hopping the ball. The second was Utley being called 'out' at first. Yes, Utley did beat the throw and I feel bad that the call was incorrect. However, what the announcers seemed to miss (or ignore) was the fact that Victorino went about 4 feet out of the base path to take Jeter out. Hence, Utley should be called out anyway.

First Post: Huge fan of your blog, the Yankees, and alumni of Virginia Tech. Last nights game got me wondering...What are some of the most extreme fan rituals during baseball games? I for one love donning my #42 jersey as The Sandman comes into to close out the game, and getting into a virtual frenzy as I listen to his anthem on loop until the last out is recorded. Interestingly enough, Mariano's two inning games this postseason have seen him struggle well into the 3rd loop during the 1st inning, and only slightly into the 2nd loop during the 2nd inning. This makes me a little uneasy as we move forward through this series. One big hit by Utley or even Howard (had the correct call been made), and that would have been a different game. One other very frustrating point about last nights game was out batter's ability to work the count deep and then watch a close pitch get called a strike. We're not protecting the plate well on deep counts. Keep up your great writing!

I don't think you're the only Yankees fan to have had that thought process. I too was more than just slightly worried that Pedro was going to turn in one of his vintage Boston starts against us.

Yeah, the going to Mo for two innings isn't going to happen every game, it can't. He's 38 years old and doesn't have the arm strength anymore. I think he needs to start relying on other relievers to help get the job done because as you put it, it can't always be Mo.

I didn't actually notice Utley was out until I was watching the recap on MLB Network and they showed about a trillion different camera angles. He beat the throw but Victorino tried to neuter Derek, so I consider it a wash.

It's going to be one of the better ones of the last decade, I feel.

Thanks for coming by. I always appreciate the new traffic.

Which is why I hope Girardi does not utilize this all the time and reserves it only for one when we absolutely have got to have Mo in the game. I think with the score being what it was and our offense being as dead as it was, going to Mo was smart. If it was 9-1, that's a different story.
//Keep up your great writing! //
Thanks and will do.

"WHO'S YOUR DADDY?!?!" *CLAP, CLAP, CLAPCLAPCLAP*
- I had fun chanting this in my house, much to the chagrin of my parents. Oh well, who needs 'em?! LOL.
What a game. What a performance by AJ. What a spanking of Pedro. It was wonderful. Smiles all night. It gives me the feeling that we're gonna see big things from Andy tonight. I'm so hyped. Happy Halloween, Beth!

All Andy needs to do is pitch like he has so far this year. That's it. If he can do that, and we manage to HIT THE BALL, we should be fine. I don't worry about Andy right now. I'd worry if he had to throw on short rest, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
Hyped doesn't begin to describe how I feel, we need to take their crowd out of it.
