ALCS Game 6: Exorcised.
Time to sip some champagne, mothertruckers. We finally beat this pissy, podunk, no-good, gimmicky, Disney-esque excuse for a franchise in the postseason. And it is marvelous. Oh man oh man is it marvelous. They had to make it ulcer-inducing right up to the very end, but they wouldn't be the Yankees if they won it in a conventional way, now would they? Nope, we're all about the late-inning heroics around these parts. Our Magic Number is now sitting pretty at 4, with one series standing between us and #27. This was our 40th American League pennant, by the way.
Big Game Andy was given the task of dispatching the RallyMonkeys to hell and I'd say he did more than a serviceable job. 6.1 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. Joba came in to finish out the 7th and Mo came in for the 2 inning save, something I don't think he's done in a while. He did give up a run, but who cares. His only K was the last out of the game. Quite fitting. Can't complain about the pitching tonight, because our problems all series long were never with the pitching.
No, our biggest problem was the offense. Or lack thereof, to be more precise. All series long we had problems scoring runs, especially executing with RISP and tonight was no different. We won by three runs, but we barely won by three runs. It wasn't a decisive, butt-kicking, send-you-home-to-your-mama-cryin' victory that we needed to silence some of the critics up, and those problems will still be there come Wednesday night. It seemed we could only score runs either on a HR or an Angels error and the Phillies aren't the Angels. The offense we DID get tonight came in a variety of methods; single, walk, error and sac fly. Numerous times we had opportunity to really put the game away and we failed. Jorge alone hit into 2 double plays with the bases loaded, which really......really sucks a$s. Damon, Tex and Alex were our biggest hitters tonight, all collecting at least 2 hits each and at least 1 RBI, along with that, Alex walked three times tonight. He's getting the Bonds treatment and with Jorge stinking up the joint behind him, he's going to get it even more from Philly pitching. I hope tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the game they all work on the fundamentals because I want to head into Philadelphia up 2-0.
And congratulations to CC Sabathia, the 2009 ALCS MVP! They should have done co-MVPs but I'll settle with Alex winning the WS MVP.
Now everyone here......raise a glass of your finest beverage in Nareah's direction, her lucky purple socks and all-around fantastic countenance has given us yet ANOTHER Yankee victory. Her butt better be at the game Wednesday night. YOU ROCK, GIRL.

yankees win! the~e~e~e~e yankees WIN!!! =)
that was a fun game! so my hubby and i went, me wearing my lucky purple socks and there were 2 angels fan sitting RIGHT behind my husband and me, and i have to admit - the new york yankees fans were yelling some obnoxious things at them. then, they started trash talking - something about how they 'love' swisher cuz he sux, then right after that comment swisher made that great double play! and while i felt badly for them for how much they were getting harrassed, it was kinda funny to see them walk out as soon as mo came in in the 8th!
when mo struck out the last batter, someone sitting in our row actually popped some champagne and started spraying it and people threw confetti - this is the 1st time i've been a part of something like this and it was AWESOME!!! the icing on the cake was to see the yankeeschick blog post =)
4 more games to win - GO YANKEES!!!

Guaranteed victory. I actually told my dad, who is a big Red Sox fan, not to worry about the Yankees losing - our lucky purple socks were in house. He said he wished he had some lucky purple socks. I said he couldn't have you.

I'm so glad you had a great time and I hope that any WS games you go to [all the home games, of course - or take the train to Philly too!] are Yankees victories. WEAR THE SOCKS.

First off, hats off to Nareah for bringing back the W. This was the biggest thus far, and there is more to come.
What a great win and series win. How tremendous to beat their biggest playoff nemesis this decade. It HAD to happen; they HAD to beat the Angels and solve that issue, and they did.
I have to admit to being tempted to advocate using The Big Guy to seal the deal last night, but what better guy to have taking the mound in Lefty, who has the most post-season wins EVVVVEERRRRR? Pettite was simply outstanding, and right from the beginning let everyone know he was going to give a money start. His curve ball was very sharp. Great ovation for him as he exited.
Great for C.C. to win the ALCS MVP, and well deserved. Yet it would not have happened without A-Rod, who easily could have won it, too, or shared it. What a monster. Great also to see JD and Swish come through last night.
Although he hit just .222, I really think Teixeira is coming around. His at-bats have been better, his sac fly last night was big insurance, and his defense is incredible. If he hits against the Phillies--and I believe he will--look out. The Angels studiously avoided A-Rod. Should Teixeira pick it up, the Yanks will impose their will.
I am strongly considering a Heartland Digital Living Room for Wednesday night.

The flip side of using CC last night would mean he would not be available on Wednesday, even if the score was the same. So we would have screwed ourselves out of that, therefore it was smart that Girardi kept the rotation the same. The layoff didn't affect Andy at all, it seemed.

The thing with Mark is that while I agree he was not hitting very well, his defense spared him from getting completely eviscerated by the fans. A part of me is aware of the irony inherent in that, seeing as Alex has had good defensive series and poor offensive ones and the fans give him no break at all - but that's the way it is sometimes with them. I'd love to see Mark really come out swinging against Philly pitching because aside from Cliff Lee, their pitching doesn't look *that* scary. Blanton, Pedro, Hamels.....I think we can beat them. Lee might be tough but if Sabathia is on his game, he'll keep it close.

If you do, I'll be there. :-)

//Now we play my most loathed team - the Phils! Bring 'em on!!! I am going to love this WS. //
As a Mets fan, I can see how you'd be excited for someone to beat the Phillies. We'll do our best.
//And I am not sure who Nareah is although you did explain a little about her history, Beth. But whoever she is - I love her too!!!! //
She's our official good-luck charm. Every home game she says she's going to, we win. AND she's undefeated in the postseason. So that's like, double good luck right there.

for clarification - my husband and i are 11-0 in yankees games this season. what's stranger is that it's not only home games. we went to one subway series game at citifield and yankees beat the mets. my husband and i took a spontaneous road trip to baltimore to watch 2 games one weekend and yankees beat the orioles. and yes, so far we're undefeated in postseason home games! i actually tried to convince my husband to take a drive to minnesota for ALDS game 3!!!
and because i'm a typical superstitious-obsessed baseball fan, i make sure i do certain superstitious things for games - i.e. the lucky purple socks, i only drink my beer at the game when the yankees are batting, taking a picture right i front of the stadium before we enter, (the list goes on and on)...
UNFORTUNATELY, my hubby and i are not able to attend the WS series game 1 (and maybe 2) because my husband works late tues-thurs. it will be impossible for him to go! i'm so bummed!!!
maybe we'll drive to philly during the weekend for game 3...

That's what I told her. I'm hoping she can since Philly isn't that far from NYC. I've already heard people calling it the NJ Turnpike Series.

YOU ARE GOING TO EVERY SINGLE WORLD SERIES GAME. Someone call Steinbrenner, get this gal and her purple socks the hook-up.

ACK! OH NO! MASS HYSTERIA! I'm a little scared now - our good luck charm won't be there. Would it be possible to sit *outside* Yankee Stadium with the lucky purple socks? I'm searching for a miracle here. LOL

LOL. it's funny you suggested that i go sit "outside" yankee stadium - can you believe you're not the 1st person to request that!
all my co-workers who are yankee fans have noticed the strange record for games my husband and i've attended this season, and of course they also know about my lucky purple socks. so when they found out the WS home games are on the nights my husband works, they all asked if i would just go sit outside yankee stadium with the purple socks on! lol. and i thought i was the only crazily superstitious yankee fan! i'm glad i'm in good kooky company! =)

Well since you've been asked to do it by more than just me, now you must. If we lose, we'll know you didn't and if we win, we'll know you did.

Oh please, my sister found these red socks at Target that have the word "Babe" on them with rhinestones and every time we play the Red Sox, I tie a piece of white string around them and hang them over my door, after beating them against the wall a few times. I am VERY superstitious.
