2009 World Series -- Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Yankees

As promised, here is the series schedule and projected pitching match-ups:

world series schedule.jpg

As for probable pitchers, all that is concrete on the Yankees official website is CC Sabathia starting Game 1 against Cliff Lee.  We do know however that Pedro Martinez is starting Game 2 and Cole Hamels is starting Game 3.  Wow.  Pedro back in the Bronx.  Is it wrong that I want to win Game 1 by a couple runs and Game 2 by a couple dozen?  I feel confident in saying that our rotation for the first three games will mirror that of the ALCS, with AJ pitching Game 2 and Andy pitching Game 3, but because of the scheduling, all 3 of them would have to pitch on 3-days rest at least twice in the series unless Girardi goes with Gaudin for Game 5.  Rosters are due tomorrow by 10am, so we'll know more specifics at that time.  Now for everyone's fun part:

Predictions!  Predictions!!

I say Yankees in 7.  It's be a hard-fought series, but we'll win all 3 of CC's start and one of Andy's.  Yankees fans and Phillies fans are encouraged to post how they think the series will end, but for those that are not Yankees fans - let's keep it civil or else I'll delete the comment.  Remember whose house you're in.

Good luck and LET'S GO YANKEES!!!!!!!

Yanks in 5 games. Phi have had way too much rest and don't have the momentum going into the series that the yanks have. Like the Rockies in 04'. I'm not too confident in burnett to be honest. He's crazy, tho last game he was getting more focused and throwing first pitch strikes which was good. I hope matsui gets benched for the burnet outing and posada is dh'd until Molina is pulled. I hope the Pedro game turns the Bronx into bagdad with bombs dropping all over the park.

Yankees in six.

I think the Yanks have the superior bullpen and rotation, with more potential to K the Phils' lineup, which by the way is more free-swinging than the Yanks. Howard and Werth alone have struck out 186 and 156 times, respectively, and Ibanez and Utley another 119 and 110, respectively. The Yanks, on the other hand, have just two players who have K'd 110 times or more--Swish (126), and Teixeira (114). The Yanks (.362) have a far better OBP than the Phillies (.334), as well as average--.283 to .258. The Phillies have a dangerous lineup, but I like the Yanks' pitching and their potential to counteract it an awful lot.

I also think Teixeira breaks out, which will only make A-Rod more dangerous. Look for the Captain to continue to do his post-season thing. This is his time of year.

I too found myself wondering what the long layoff between the end of the NLCS and the start of the World Series would do to the Phillies - would they be cold to start the game or have they been keeping themselves going all this time.

If he can not give up 4 runs to start the game, that would be fantastic. And I don't care if he and Jorge don't get along that well, no more Molina. I'm tired of losing Jorge's bat.

I hate that guy. I will always hate that guy. Great pitcher, horrible horrible personality and attitude.

Everything I've read so far about position-by-position comparisons reads out quite similar to that, with the Yankees getting the edge in pitching, both rotation and bullpen. So you're on to something there.

Great numbers, Jason. You do have to wonder how the Phillies would play if they faced AL East-style pitching and offense rather than the AAAA crap they deal with in the NL. I mean, how much of how well they hit is determined by the fact they face sub-par pitching and hitting on a nightly basis? I don't think anyone is going to argue that the AL is the far superior league.

Games 5 and 6 he looked great the plate. So hopefully that means he IS coming around, if Alex has no choice but to be pitched to, we're going to be scoring a lot of runs. I agree about Derek - some players just thrive this time of year, and he always has.

hey - i'm really hoping that we get game 1 today since AJ is still very unsteady or unpredictable in the postseason.
my hubby has actually cancelled his late-night work so we can try to go to the game, but it's just too expensive! we are going to try last minute, like a few hours before the game in hopes the prices go down by then...
i'm wearing my lucky purple socks to work just in case we end up going to the game!!! wish us luck!
GO YANKEES - LET'S TAKE GAME 1!!! =)

HDLR tonight if you can make it, Beth, and if the weather holds up.

You can do it, Nareah. Remember, the Yankees need you. If we win it all, it'll be worth it. I'll put my lucky A-Rod shirt on before the game and have my Yankees cap and all my paraphernalia out and ready to go as well. Need all the luck we can get!

Excellent! I'll deffo try and make it. I had so much fun the last time.

I didn't look at the HDLR when it was live, but I did read the summary lmao. My favorite part:

7:42
Beth: Come on CC, get out of this inning. Please. I'll send you a cheeseburger.
7:42
JasonfromTheHeartland: That gives me hope for the Yankees' offense, Mike.
7:42
JasonfromTheHeartland: Just one, Beth?
7:42
Beth: Alright, 20.

How does this HDLR thing work? Does it work with iPhone? Sorry to blog-Jack Beth :-(

no such luck on getting tickets! =(
but my hubby did skip work so that we can be watching to game together at home. i've got my lucky purple socks on and everything. i even realized that i hadn't worn my usual everyday earring to work today (which aren't necessarily lucky, but just the earrings i had worn all the times i've gone to games) so changed my earrings and everything!
can't be too careful - i gotta stick to my routine for yankee games! i guess i'm only drinking my beer only when the yankees are batting tonight, like i do at the games. lol.

Oh, it's fine! Go to heartlandpinstripes.wordpress.com and go his most recent post. You should see a link in there [text is click here to enter] and when you click on it, you're taken to the HDLR.

We're currently losing, and if I was mean I'd blame you. I will however blame our offense. Please do all you can to get to Game 2.
