Game 123: Mark Teixeira 3, Oakland A's 2.
It's probably not a good thing when one guy is your entire offense, but every now and again, these kinds of games remind you just how important that guy is. For us, Mark Teixeira was an acquisition that will continue to show how important it was as not only the season progresses, but the years he's going to spend with us too.
BTW, if you're wondering why there's a picture of Kenny Loggins leading off this post, I'm listening to Danger Zone right now and I couldn't think of a picture game-related to put there. And really, is there anything cooler than Kenny effing Loggins? I think not, my friends. I think not. Especially the song "Danger Zone". I guess the Yankees are riding into the Danger Zone right now so......there! I just tied that picture to the Yankees. I'm a genius, really. The world needs more Kenny Loggins, I'm convinced.
Chad Gaudin made the start for the Yanks tonight and as a spot-start.....didn't suck nearly as bad as I expected. I mean, he wasn't good but he was adequate and that's what I was hoping for anyway. He went 4.1 innings, gave up 1 hit and 0 ER, walked 5 and struck out 5. Too many walks, but he kept them scoreless. I'll take it. Aceves threw 2.1 innings, gave up 2 runs on 4 hits and struck out 2 while walking none. Phil Squared and Mo threw the final 2.1 innings and gave up 0 ER on 1 H. So the bullpen were really the unsung heroes of this game, aside from Mark of course.
Well......the Yankees got 6 hits......Mark Teixeira only had one of them, but that hit was a 2-run HR in the 4th that ended up being the winning runs. Earlier in the game he grounded out to third, but scored a runner. So that was the sum total of our offensive output tonight. Derek went 2-4, Johnny Damon went 2-4 and Nick Swisher went 1-4 and there's the rest of our hits. Nothing doing tonight as you can see. Thankfully we won the game in spite of our rather tepid bats. I really hope we get some more offense against the Red Sox, I have a feeling we're going to need it. They play damn well at home.
The AL East standings remain constant at 7 games up in our favor, however our victory lowers the Magic Number to 36. 9 more until it starts leading off the posts! This win also gets us 24 games closer to the magic 100 wins mark. We have an off-day tomorrow, but hopefully Toronto pulls its head out of its *** and beats Boston (HOW THE HELL DOES ROY HALLADAY LOSE TO THESE CLOWNS?!?!?!?!) so it'll be a nice robust 35 as we go into Fenway.

Beth: You are right. Gaudin didn't suck as much as I thought he would either! In fact, he was pretty good!
I hope this off day doesn't ruin the Yankees' momentum going into Boston. They have to win and make us know for sure that they will win the division!

Joe Mauer. As much as Derek and Mark are having great seasons, they aren't anywhere near MVP of the league. Sometimes you have to take off the Yankee fan hat and look at the bigger picture - the season Joe Mauer is having right now as a catcher is damn near historic. To NOT give him the MVP would be really, really dumb. He deserves the MVP and I am sure he'll get it.

So, yeaaah, the Sox just swept the Jays. Not cool. The Yanks better go into this series without holding back. I hope the guys that went to the Creed concert didn't have their brains melted by less-than-mediocre music, LOL. But, I'm staying positive, and saying that the Yankees will be fine. Of course, as a Yankee fan, I'm prone to having a nervous breakdown because of this. Please pray that I don't. Thanks! =D

Tex was indeed "the" offense last night. He appears to be in the running for MVP this year, it all depends on how the Yankees finish. As for the comment on Mauer, he is indeed having an outstanding year, however his Twins are five games under .500 and although this is no fault of his the selection committee tends to look at teams that do well record-wise.

I think 20 runs tonight should be sufficient proof that they weren't holding back. LOL

You'll be fine, they'll be fine. We'll all be fine. I'm sure of it. :D

I agree that playoff-bound teams will have their MVP candidates given more weight than those coming from teams in last place, but regardless of whether Minnesota goes to the playoff or not, Joe Mauer better get the MVP. Normally I wouldn't trumpet a player on someone else's team if someone on my own is in the running, but Mauer is so far ahead of anyone else in the AL right now.....I mean he's hitting .378! In the last week of August!!
Jeter got robbed in 2006, I think everyone knows that. Morneau wasn't even the most valuable player on his team that year, I would have put Santana over him. That being said, if Mauer doesn't win it, it'll be like 2006 all over again, only the Twins will be on the receiving end this time.
