And it shall end the way it began.
On April 18th, 1923, Babe Ruth hit Yankee Stadium's first HR; a three-run shot to power the Yankees over the Red Sox, 4-1. It was the first of many HRs The Babe would hit and the first of many wins Yankee Stadium would see. Tonight, was the last. Barring some kind of unforeseen miracle, it's the last game we'll play here......but we won, and that's all that counts. In a season where wins seemed to be at a premium, this one is most sweet.
Andy Pettitte was given the task of starting this historic game, and aside from a few bumps along the way, he did quite well. He went 7 innings, gave up only 2 ER on 7 hits and struck out 3. Veras, Coke, Chamberlain and Mo closed out the game, and gave up no hits or runs amongst them. Nicely done.
Seven runs on nine hits isn't half bad, considering how poorly our offense can really be. Jose Molina went 3-4 with 2 RBIs, the runs coming on a HR in the 4th. It was the last HR hit in Yankee Stadium. I would have liked to see Alex have that distinction, but when he takes the crown as all-time HR champion, this won't matter much. Bobby Abreu was the other offensive star of the game tonight, going 2-4. Thank you Yankees for capping off this season with a reason for us all to be proud we call ourselves fans.
Now, while I would ordinarily put up pictures of the players who contributed most to tonight's win here in the Stars of the Game section, I figured for this game there can be but one star, and none other. So to the Grand Old Lady of the game, host of countless World Series games, memorable moments, historical moments and even absurd moments, we say thank you and goodbye. In all our greatest memories of this team, you played a great part. Mystique and Aura may not be real, but at least you made us think they could be.
