The Yankees have mastered the art of the two-step.

The Yankees appeared to be righting their quickly sinking ship by sweeping the Orioles, a team that even in this sorry state we're in, is worse than us.  I had a lot of high hopes for this series against the Red Sox, as I'm sure most of the fan base did.  Then we lose the first two games in grand fashion, and again the Yankees are looking like the team with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.  If we lose tomorrow afternoon, we might as well just fall in.

In the event that we do not make the playoffs this year, there's only a couple things I'm really worried about.  And both concern our upper management.  Hank is either going to throw around tons of money a la Dad and build the team up with past-their-prime superstars to try and show our fans and MLB that this year is just a fluke OR he's going to sell off half the team and load the lineup full of kids.  Neither of which are truly appealing options.  I don't think the team is completely bad, I think there are contracts I'm looking forward to coming off the books.  Giambi is one of them.  I do want the team to revamp and get better for next season, but not a fire sale.

If this is truly our team's swan song this season, let's at least go out with a modicum of dignity about us.  I want to see the team out there playing hard regardless of the score.  If they start looking like they don't give a sh!t, well then......I'll stop giving a sh!t too.

Right now it's all about pride so I hope they don't mail it in the rest of the way.

As for next year, I'm sure they'll throw $$ ay guys, but I wouldn't call them past their prime vets. The names at the top of the list have to be AJ Burnett, Sabathia, and Teixeira. Those wouldn't be too bad. I'm pretty sure hank wrote the season off before, but who knows, a poor finish could make some heads roll.

ps-i think the link on the left is still to my old site. no rush, as soon as you can get to it would be appreciated. :)

I thought I changed it; it must not have took.

I'm with you, Yankees Chick - no fire sale and no over-the-hill superstars. One thing I came away with after watching the sickening beating we took in the first two games against the RS was that Boston seems to be bringing up scrappy, single-them-t0-death, work-the-count type grinders (Pedroia, Youkilis, Lowry) and moving away from the slugger mentality of the past. And it's working for them. They look more like our '90s team than we do. I want us to get C.C., just like I wanted us to get Santana. What was Cashman thinking building a rotation around Hughes and Kennedy, as promising as they looked last year? But I digress. I want us to build a team that's not afraid to get their uniforms dirty, whatever they cost. I like Nady. He's not the fastest guy on the planet but I like his approach at the plate. More X-men is what we need.

Btw, I've enjoyed reading your stuff ever since Pete Abe first posted about your site. Once I get my MLB blog moving, I hope you'll link to it. We Yankee fans need to stick together in these desperate times!
