Nice to see the Sox front office is typical.

Well, Manny has been gone all of one day, and already the smear campaign is in full force.  I'm sure that most of what they're saying is factual, as Manny did have a reputation for being, to put it nicely, a flake.  That being said, the fact that they'd decide to wait until after he's gone to air all the dirty laundry is sadly typical of what the Sox have done to players who leave town under less than amicable circumstances.  It seems like everyone, from the players to Theo Epstein himself, have had some kind of mean or digging comment to say about him today.  Which frankly I expected.  Carlton Fisk, Roger Clemens, Mo Vaughn, Nomar, Pedro, Grady Little.....I'm sure there's more names that I'm missing.

I can't believe I'm actually defending Manny Ramirez.  He seemed like a nice, but loopy guy who a few years ago I would have loved to see playing for us.  I'm glad he's out of the AL now, and I wish him well out in LA.  That said, he was an integral part of that team winning two World Series championships and deserves better treatment than this.  David Ortiz actually said he wanted Manny traded.  Wait until Ortiz wants out and then this "Big Papi" stuff will be a thing of the past.  Everyone on that team should realize that no matter what you do for them, no matter what kind of heroics you provide the fans, once the front office decides you're expendable, you might as well be a serial murderer.  You're nothing, you're garbage and you're a whole bunch of other stuff that rather than hashing out when you were still on the team, they decide to throw around when you're not.  You're less than the sh!t on John Henry's shoes.

You stay classy, Boston.

It's sometimes amazing how far you will go to have events reflect negatively on the Red Sox. Manny was a fool while he was with the Red Sox, but now that he is gone, the Red Sox are dirt becuase they had to give up $7 million and 2 players just so he wouldn't continue to whine and poison the clubhouse. I read the comments and I thought the players were very neutral, commenting that it was best for the team AND Manny, since he so obviously wanted a change. Nobody wants to be around someone that doesn't want to be there.

Now there are the stories coming out in the press that Bor-*** might have given Manny the idea to act this way so that he could get out of his contract and go for free agency next year. Bor-*** wouldn't make any money off someone under contract, so Manny playing for the Red Sox was not worth anything to him. Either Manny was in on some kind of plan to get out of his contract, or he was the biggest jerk in sports. Actually, I think he qualifies as both. I will miss his bat, but I won't miss his disregard for what he owes the game for making $20 million a year.

Damon was offered a reasonable deal. He was getting older, his arm was (and still isn't) the greatest, and he was the one to choose the Yankees. It's not like the Red Sox forced him out. It's not like they offered him a pathetic contract and forced him to walk away from a team that he brought to a higher level and go manage the Dodgers.

The Red Sox offered Nomar a lucrative contract too, and he decided to walk. This is a business as well, they shouldn't overpay people in their declining years just for the heck of it. Manny also signed this contract, he agreed to the team options that were found in it. Obviously he and Boras did not look ahead. I cannot believe that you are defending Manny. And "Arch" I remember that Damon was offered a decent price too, but he wasn't worth what the Yankees paid him, except to the Yankees. They got a solid player in return for overpaying, but he was far from special.

Nomar decided to decline I meant and was ultimately traded

Manny only recently signed with Bor-***, so Bor-*** had no control (and no financial interest) in the contract. After this year, when Manny goes free-agent, then Bor-*** will start raking in the cash (assuming anyone overbids for Manny). I can't believe that anyone would be willing to sign him long term after what he pulled in Boston. And even if the Yankees look to sign him, it's not like they will be bidding against Boston.

I hope he gets a deal for less than the $20 million that he would have received for each option year. He is nowhere near an all-around player like A-Rod, and A-Rod was over-priced (probably not by much though).

I don't keep up much with who has which agent and for how long, haha.

Funny..isn't that kind of what the Yankees did to Torre? Think of everything Torre did for the Yankee franchise, then they don't win the WS for a couple of years and suddenly Torre is painted as the devil by Yankee management. Remember when they offered hima crap ontract, JUST so Torre wouldn't except it..and the Yankees knew this to. They forced Torre out; didn't give him a ounce of respect. And you call the Yankees classy?

From one Yankee fan to another, all I can say is, awesome blog! Keep up the good work!

To dcclark83,
Yeah, that "crap" contract that we offered Joe Torre would have kept him the highest paid manager in baseball. I respect his decision to leave but you can't blame it on the money we offered him.
