All-Star rosters announced; the players/fans still can't get it right
I think the players and the fans should only watch All-Star games, not vote on the players participating in them. I say this because they never get it right. Look at the players on this year's ASG and tell me who doesn't belong there. Jason Varitek? The guy is hitting .217. What the f*ck is he doing on the team? Where's Mike Mussina? Why isn't Jason Giambi on the team? What the hell is Joe Crede doing on the team?
I swear, every year it gets worse and worse. The game counts now, so you'd think they'd want the best possible players on both teams to maximize the outcome.
Another reason I probably won't watch the game, outside of seeing my players' names introduced.

I agree, Beth. You know it mostly has everything to do with popularity rather than skill and professionalism. Some make sense but many do not. I do have to say, whether any Yankee fans think Jeter does or does not belong, I am very glad he is there. Maybe he is not having his best year on the field , and I know from people here he probably isn't, but as a total package, I think he is an all star. He continually holds himself to the high standards professional people and those who are heroes for kids, should hold themselves to. Again, maybe some of you guys might not think he is an all star but there are not too many others playing the game right now that I believe make up what I think is the total package professional athlete.

I agree, fans should not be voting on this.
Giambi has a case, definitely.
However, Mussina really shouldn't be on this team. He is having a pretty good year, but there are others having better seasons. And I am not saying that if Mussina had made it that it would be some terrible decision, just saying that others are more deserving.

I am sure that someone would object to how the voting went no matter who decided. Varitek was voted in by the player/coach/manager ballot. I have more faith in that vote than I do the fan vote. Being the record holder for most no-hitters caught probably counts for something. A lot of times it seems like the fan voting is based on the previous years performance.
A valid arguement against Jeter is that he is not the best AL shortstop in the game right now. However, if any Yankee is going to be on the team for the last All-Star game at Yankee stadium, there really is not a better representative.

That has no bearing on his play this season or whether or not he should be on the All-Star team. The ASG is about what you've done this season, not overall in your career. This season, he s.ucks hosewater. He should not be there, it's an insult to players who worked hard and got no recognition for it.

Yes indeed, this is why the game is held once EVERY year. Personally I voted for Mauer and Navarro for AL catcher. Kinsler and Polanco for 2B -nothing against Pedroia but I felt that he did NOT deserve the starting nod for the AL. Germaine Dye should be starting, but may not make it this year.....sad. Too many deserving players have been left off. That is what happens when it becomes a popularity contest. The same goes for the NBA all-star game. In 1992 it featured Magic Johnson who did not even play that season. The all-star game is indeed for THAT season, your reward for a great career should be the hall of fame.....Hey, maybe we can vote Yogi Berra as starting catcher next year!
