What's this? The Yankees won two in a row and took the series?
I can't believe it either! Granted we went from scoring 8 runs last night to barely scoring 2 tonight, but I don't think anyone really thought they'd score the same or a little less tonight. At least we won. It's a continued step in the right direction. I was worried that the combination of Ian Kennedy on the mound for us and a soft-tossing lefty on the mound for the Orioles would equal one getting blown out of the game in the 3rd and the other pitching a CG shutout. Fortunately for us, Ian Kennedy picked a good game to remember how to pitch. Granted he got himself into trouble a couple times and nearly blew the game open for the O's, but he gave up only one run, which is miles better than his previous starts. It's the most we could have asked for out of him, considering our rotation is in a bit of disarray at the present. His final line was 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 4 K. It's the four walks he gave up that got him into trouble twice. Veras, Farnsworth and God himself finished out the game, with Mo earning his first win of the year. The ERA is now down to 0.47. Sheesh.
A very funny and truly hilarious moment happened in the 9th inning, when the HP ump took about 4 light years to call Jason Giambi out on a foul tip that the O's catcher didn't even catch, as it were. He had already thrown the ball out to the pitcher when out of the clear blue, the ump decided Jason foul tipped into the catcher's mitt and called him out. Well, Joe Girardi did not like that one bit and stormed onto the field, screaming and pointing and slamming the catcher's mask into the ground. He even threw his hat down twice, kicked it and then kicked the dirt. Somewhere Billy Martin was grinning. It was classic Lou Piniella, even. He should have spit on home plate as he left, though. That would have been a nice final flourish. Someone on a Yankee board noted that Giambi seemed to walk back to the dugout in a trance, and that Girardi seems to care more than the players do at this point. I mean, let's face it......when was the last time you saw a Yankee manager go postal on an ump over a BS call? The whole team looks lethargic and seeing Girardi lose it was a startling reminder of how complacent everyone seems. I won't begin to assume that this will "fire up" the team, but I hope it knocks them on their butts for a while at least.
What ended up being the nice final flourish in lieu of the above-mentioned event, was Robbie Cano's walk-off hit to give us our 2-1 victory. He used his only hit of the game for a good purpose. Let's ignore the fact that before that hit, he had 3 at-bats and saw a total of 3 pitches. He's hitting over .200 at least, so it's a small victory. Our only real offensive star tonight was Johnny Damon, who went 3-4. Godzilla went 2-4, but three is more than two so Johnny gets it tonight. Hurrah. Can we score some runs in our next game? These ridiculous "wait until the last minute and then do something" games are aggravating.
