Our Moose is cooked.

Well sh!t.  Not how I envisioned this game ending, but at least we weren't shut out.  I had a feeling it would be a tough game with Mussina pitching, but I really thought we had a shot to win this.  I like and respect Mike as a person, but he's done.  I mean that with all sincerity and appreciation for what he has done for us, but at this stage....he's throwing BP up there.  I could hit those pitches and I've never swung a baseball bat before.  Our relief corps tonight did a good job.....wish I could say the same for our starter.  Maybe next time.  *sigh*

Offensively.....we didn't do jack.  I mean, jack and squat.  Zilch.  Nada.  Zero.  Bupkiss.  That is until Alex hit a HR, but we did nothing after that, squandering chance after chance.  Come on guys.....no repeats of last season, please.  That means no DPs, no running ourselves out of innings and no poor plate discipline.  Let's do better for the 3rd game and win the series.

I don't think Moose pitched that poorly. He gave up a few weak hits and made a few mistakes but he got out of trouble when he needed it the most.

I agree about that, it's just his velocity was poor and he seemed to give up walks and cheap hits at all the wrong times. Like, he'd have gotten out of one jam just to pitch us into another. I might have been harsh on him, and I hope his next start goes better.....I'm just afraid that this is what we're going to get from him this season, with a few bright spots thrown in. I hope I'm wrong.

i kinda agree with both perspectives. moose wasn't so bad, in one way, BUT it seems like a portent of the season to come for moose and that IS really bad. (am i making any sense?) probably not since i think i have some form of freezing-brain damage from being at the game today and sitting through 3+hours of freezing my buns off watching the frustrating offense perform the disappearing magic act (with two slight exceptions with some excitement - a-rod's 7th inning HR and the 9th inning chance coming alive - then squashed).
unfortunately, moose is the type of pitcher who after the season he had last year, really needed today's game to give him a good start to the year, and unfortunately didn't happen. oh well...

btw- in response to your other post regarding oneil's # being taken and yankee fans not liking it - i don't know if this has anything to do with it or it was just a coincidence but during the game today in between innings they showed a LONG montage of oneil video clips on the big screen, like a "we still love you and you're a beloved yankee forever in our hearts" kinda tribute! it could've totally been a coincidence or perhaps it was because of the # thing. it was probably nothing but just thought i'd share since i was at the game...
also, it was great to be present for arod's first HR of the season! =) especially since before the game they presented him with his 2007 AL MVP award.

it's april and it was like 40 degrees last night. moose is about finesse. he had some nice pitches on the outside corner that the ump was only giving him about 50% of the time. also he hung that one breaking ball for the 2 run HR but other than that i thought he did a decent job.

with this lineup, a starter giving up 3-4 runs a game shouldn't make or break us. gotta get these left-handed bats hitting.
