Yankees take series; bats still in Tampa.

Another great game to come home to, I figure if I have to miss the game, they darn well better win.  And they did, although the last 3 games, the offense has been sputtering, if not completely comatose.  Three runs in the first game, two last night and three tonight.  With the kind of firepower we have, we should be scoring more than that.  I'm not saying this is immediate cause for concern, but come on guys.....let's not give fans flashbacks to the last 2 seasons.  Other than that, we got what we wanted out of this game; we had enough offense to win, great pitching and a series victory.

Phil Hughes started tonight and went 6 innings, giving up two runs on four hits, while striking out four and walking one.  I didn't get a chance to see the game, but I'd say that looks pretty good.  No homers, so all 4 hits were kept in the park.  Traber and Bruney pitched the 7th and Joba/Mo combined to finish out the game, with Joba earning the win and Mo getting his 2nd save of the year.  Can't say much about that, other than it's what we should expect to see all year.  Which will be just fine by me.

Calling the offense "sluggish" would be an understatement, but as I said, I hope that ends soon.  We only got 6 hits tonight and Bobby Abreu was the only player to get more than one.  He's our unanimous Star of the Game for the offense, because he was the only player that did anything.  So this section of the post will be rather short and sweet.  Thanks for the slap hit, Bobby.....you did us proud.

Since Mo and Joba got a Star™ on Tuesday, they don't get one tonight.  Doesn't take away from the outstanding job they did, though.

The offense has been pretty much non-existent. Look back at the series and we didn't see a lot of quality runs. Alex's HR was really the only big spot. Melky's HR just cleared the wall and we picked upa few runs after defensive miscues. Good thing the pitching is there. Last year we didn't win these types of games. we very well could be 0-3.

Part of why the offense is sluggish is because they are facing good pitching Beth.

Really? I had no idea. I thought we were facing Little League pitchers who were wearing blindfolds.

I'm aware of the caliber of pitchers we faced in this series, but that has no bearing on me being a little perturbed by the fact that a team with the offensive capabilities that we have was unable to get anything more than just *barely* enough to win.

Hello, YankeeChick -

Love the entries and look forward to reading more. Couldnt agree more about the sluggish offense but was thrilled to see Skipper use a little small ball to get it done.

Are you stumping for Joba to stay in the pen? I know am...feel free to look me up at The Bronx Bomb.

Go Yanks!

Perhaps you should listen to Johnny Damon, who properly made note of the fact that they were facing the best pitching rotation in baseball. You'd think Yankee fans would be happy with a series win. We all know that the Yankee offense is going to be what it always is, and when they are facing some lesser pitching, the bats will come alive.

But good pitching beats good hitting, always has and always will.

We should be greatful that we won 2 games with pitching. Imagine that? The hitting will come we have too much offense. It's the pitching that keeps me wondering. I don't want to become a 2008 version of the early 90's seattle mariners

It's great to see the Yankees win with pitching first. They have too much firepower not to hit. It's the pitching that keeps me wondering .

Who said I wasn't happy we won the series? Some of you are reading things that aren't there.

I would love to see what he does as a starter, but something about the set-up they have him in now reminds me of what they did to Mo. Starter becomes closer's set-up man, then becomes closer when closer leaves. I'm sure a lot of Yankees fans will be royally ticked off if that happens, but if he can provide us more value as the closer....the team should do what utilizes him best. We'll see toward the end of the year when he starts games.

I said in my blog today: Leave him there. Rivera to Wetland, Stanton to Rivera, Joba to Rivera and ultimately ??? to Joba. Lets get back to playing 6 inning games, mix in a little small ball and return to dominance. If you let me only pick one, I would say we have a better chance to win with the bullpen than with the rotation (right now, if I could only pick one) so why mess with it? I know that sounds odd, but do you get me?

I totally agree with Joba staying in the pen and also wrote about it on my blog. Joba is the perfect set up man for Mariano and can be groomed to take his spot when he retires. Yes he could be a good starter, but he has the ability to be an all time great closer!

Love your insight, keep it coming!

I think our lineup is way better than Detroit's. But like Detroit, the hitting is not there. Jason have to wake up soon and Damon produce like a lead off hitter. Please don't be worried about Ian Kennedy bad start, he will comeback strong. If Pettitte pitches good this season we will be fine.

p.s Please Girardi dont get sick again
