I don't like the looks of this.
Yanks include Phil Hughes in deal to sign Johan Santana

What in the blue perpendicular f*ck is going on?! Why are we putting him in this deal? I don't want Santana if it means giving up Hughes, as much as seeing Santana in my team's uniform would be significant upgrade from where we're currently at. Are we just going to throw every ounce of young talent we have at the Twins in the hopes they find something they like? I've heard everything from Melky+Cano+Kennedy to now all that plus Hughes and some other young kid, like Tabata or Horne. This reeks of a Steinbrenner move, like when we signed Randy Johnson. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, I suppose. This has Hank's name written all over it. Just when we all thought Cashman was really running the team, it turns out he's getting edged out step by frickin' step. We look desperate and while it's in our best interests to keep Santana away from Boston, if we have to mortgage the farm to get him, it's not going to be worth it in the long run.....and isn't that supposedly what this new "era" is all about? Moving toward the long-term, not short-term interests? The Yankees just blinked.

Hughes will be just as good as Santana in the long run. Trading him now makes no sense. He may only be 21, but he has showed a lot of maturity, poise, and promise, as have some of the other young Yankees pitchers, like Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain. Let Boston have Santana. Why risk the future of the franchise on the field and financially to acquire Santana's arm? This should be one major free agent the Yankees take a back seat on.

You always trade unknown for known. There is no way of telling if Hughes, Kennedy or Chamberlain will ever amount to anything long term. All the pitchers that the A's received for Mulder & Hudson were as legit a prospect as the Yankees have now, how'd that work out? Pavano & Armas Jr. for Pedro didn't work out for the Expos. Edwin Jackson was more of a phenom than any of the Yankees three when he was 20, now he's 24 with an ERA pushing 6.00 for the Rays.
Santana is the best pitcher in baseball, give up whatever prospects needed to get him.

I'm blown away by the Yankee diehards response to Hughes for Santana. Hughes hasn't shown a dam thing at this point. His entire value is wrapped up in potential and that doesn't mean **** in the real world. Santana has proven himself in the real world. On top of that he is only 29 which means he's really just coming into his prime. I'm shocked at you Yankee Chick. You seem more level headed then most bloggers. This is a great deal for the Yankees. We are talking ace here, as in Beckett vs. Santana type ace. Have you seen what the Red Sox have accomplished with ace's. Two world series wins. That's what. Schilling in '04 and Beckett in '07. In case you didn't notice Wang is no ace and neither is Hughes at least not yet and we don't have the time to wait. He's 21 and it could take another 5 years before he develops into a major league stud.

Don't let the rumors eat you alive. If a Santana deal occurs between NYY and the Twins. It will be for Ian Kennedy OR Phillip Hughes, NOT BOTH.
Melky Cabrera will have to go, but do not worry as Andrew Jones OR Mike Cameron will look good in pinstripes.
Chase Wright and a minor player to be named later;mostly likely an infielder not named Tabata will finish up the deal.
Robinson Cano is UNTOUCHABLE.
Humberto Sanchez is still a Star in the making.
This Steinbrenner is a better version trust me!

"yoits" I don't know that Hughes will be just as good as Santana, if that were a sure thing then this trade doesn't even come close to getting done. But the way I look at it is that Lester, Buchholz, or Hughes in 3 years may be exactly how effective (if not a little better, Buchholz in particluar) Santana is at that same point. They will be hitting their prime and Johan will be 33 or so.
Michael, I understand he is the best in the game, although that status could be gone once 2008 gets underway, but he will still be one of the best. But it isn't as though it is Hughes straight up for Santana, there are 3 or 4 quality prospects being mentioned by each team. And I wouldn't mind if the Red Sox pulled the trigger on what is being rumored to keep him (only if Buchholz and Ellsbury are not included) from going to the Yankees, but it is still very debatable whether or not it should be done.

I think you're right, Beth. How much is any one player worth, really? Santana and agent have done a marvelous job driving up his price playing on Yankees/Red Sox dynamics. I say--let the Red Sox have him. May buy them the division (but nothing more) this year, maybe next, at most a third. But in the long term, the cost is simply too high.

I'd much rather see Kennedy go before Hughes, but as long as it's one and not both, I'll be OK with it. They've got a few highly thought of pitching prospects still on the farm and trading one of the best ones in my opinion isn't a bad idea for Santana. To piggy back off of Michael's comment, there's been plenty of can't miss pitching prospects totally tank and many a rookie pitcher has done really well right out of the box and quickly faltered as the rest of the league gets more familiar with him. We know what comes with Johan. Anybody else is still a crapshoot despite their high ceiling.

it would be melky, hughes and one other prospect. the last prospect WILL NOT (and this is from a scource inside the yankees to si.com) be horne, tabata, kenedey, or joba. johan santana has put together the best four year stretch since sandy koufax and as mutch as i like hughes i just dont think he is likely to be this good. its to mutch of a risk. johan is 28, he pitches well at yankees stadium, i just dont see what is not to like. also the yankees have MANY arms in their system, loosing hughes will NOT kill their farm system.

I normally am pretty even-keeled, but this to me reeks of a Steinbrenner desperation move and I don't like it. The Twins haven't shown any interest in what the Red Sox have offered them (unless that's changed), so for us to be throwing everything and the kitchen sink at them......we blinked. We didn't need to. That's what bothers me most about this. I know who and what Santana is and when he pitched in the All-Star Game and Jorge caught him, I salivated at the thought of that happening 30+ times a season. I just don't like the idea of our F.O., specifically Hank Steinbrenner & Co., mortgaging the farm because they absolutely have to do everything right now. Cashman doesn't seem to have any input in this right now and that's something else that bothers me. He's the **** general manager and he's going to wake up one morning and find out Hughes is a Twin. That shouldn't be.

The idea of including Hughes should have never even come up, as the Yankees should have walked away once his name was brought up by the Twins. The Steinbrenners need to know when to shut their traps. It is pretty clear that they are the ones pushing for hughes to be included. Now Santana is good, really good but I grew up with the youth movement that resulted in the latest Dynasty and I would love to see that happen again with the now veteran cast showing the youth how its done. I have a huge feeling that if hughes is traded that we are all going to look back at this like the Kazmir trade and biting our tongues. Hopefully Brian will step up to the stubborn Steinbrenners and kill this deal and keep hughes before he wins a CY Young with someone else.

I think that Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera is a great deal for the talent that Santana has to offer. You look at it and see that Santana, 2-Time Cy Young award winner may I add, can be in PINSTRIPES!? I understand if the Redsox were not involved in this disscussion it wouldnt matter, but if the Redsox, who just added Jacoby Ellsbury to their trade talks, the Yankees might not see a World Series title for years to come... In short terms... GET SANTANA !!!
