Joe Torre is.......not coming back next year.

I'm still a little shocked by the news, no matter how much I knew it was coming. The team offered him a contract for next season (with a pay cut that would lead to bonuses) and an option for next season....and he said no. I think this was a case of "mutual separation" in that if Torre wanted to come back, he would have accepted and if the Yankees wanted him back, they would have offered him something more substantial. It's a shame that he had to leave on a low note, but such is life. So now the search is on for a new manager.....who are the leading candidates? I would think Girardi, Mattingly and maybe a wild card....God I hope not LaRussa. Sh!t. You'd see open revolt if that were to happen.

All this being said, I think the FO handled this horribly. They didn't bother negotiating, they basically said "thanks for everything, it's been nice" and slapped him in the face. I don't agree with that. I think if they were TRULY wanting to not bring him back next year, they should have outright said so. I know the last 7 years have been sh!tty, but the guy deserves better than this. As someone on a Yankee forum said today, "Welcome to the Hank and Hal era". Welcome indeed.

Monetarily, I think they offered him a fair deal. I think they disrespected him by only offering a 1 year deal and I don't balme Joe at all for telling them to stick it.
I have a nasty taste in my mounth and it ain't my wife's cooking. It's like you closed with, "Welcome to the Hank and Hal era." I'm not digging it.

Yeah, I have a feeling things are going to be quite different for the team as far as the FO is concerned. I'm not saying we should expect a return to the 80s, but what happens to the next manager if we don't make the WS next season? Will he get fired? If so, who do you hire after that? Who wants to manage a team that if they don't make the WS, you're out of a job? I just hope whatever changes lay ahead, stability is a constant.

I would take a one year deal as an insult. After serving for more than a decade as the Yanks manager and going to the playoffs every year, winning four Chamionships, it would feel like a slap in the face to me. It's not easy to make the playoffs every year, no matter the payroll. The Indians were just better than us this year.
Now to offer a slap in the face deal when we have Pettite, Mo, Jorge, and A-Rod to a lesser extent care about Joe and want him to manage, this could affect our whole ball club.
This could be the end of an era. I feel bad and insulted that they would offer him this and expect him to accept. Now the Yanks brass do not look favorable in the publics eye and in their free agents eyes. Now we could look forward to looking worse than the Devil Rays. This is a sad day for the Yankees. I thought we had more class than this.

I agree about Torre. I think it was a way to seemingly let the FO not be the "heavy". I know it seems many fans had decided Torre's time was up anyway but there was something a little dirty about the way this was done. I like Torre and regardless if his time really was up, he deserved a little more respect from the FO.
I have no real right to say who would be a good replacement except that bringing in LaRussa would just totally destroy the classiness (at least IMO) of the Yankees. LaRussa is an a$$clown.
I am indeed sad over this news.

Yup, you need to get creative. I completely agree with you though; LaRussa would be an absolutely horrid choice.

What a slap in the face to someone who, above all others, should not have to prove himself in the postseason. I never thought I would want the Steinbrenners to go away but now I'm not so sure. Obviously, Ol' Hank and Hal don't have a clue.

Oh, and totally agree with Beth. NO Tony LaRussa. That would just ****

Okkkkk, how about if I say that would just stink...

It's a sad day. I feel like we've just said a final good-bye to a dear friend.
It wasn't unexpected, but it's sad just the same.

You don't suppose Hank and Hal are like so many children who don't really want to take over a family business so they think if they run it into the ground they could sell it, do you?

I believe they legitimately want to own the team; there's money to be made in running this ship. Not to mention, keeping it in the family prevents outside agitators from either trying to acquire the team or saying the team is going down the toilet and in fire-sale mode. I think if George thought either of them WEREN'T capable, he would have passed it to his son-in-law (or would have if not for the DUI arrest). The Yankees are as much a Steinbrenner hood ornament as the Steinbrenners are a Yankee hood ornament. I honestly can't imagine anyone else owning the team.

I agree, this was very poorly handled. If this is how the new Yankee brass manages things, we could see a repeat of the eighties in the Big Apple.

as a 52 year yankee fan i have seen a lot of crab before but this is the worse case of not knowing anything about baseball that i have seen in my lifetime. the person they should have got rid of is that wimp cashman who gave all that money to players who were not good to begin with. but torre has always been class and i can't say the same about the low class owners we have now.
signed: a former long time yankee fan.

when are the owners going to accept the responiblity of who they sign to play. they give you these 3rd class players like pavano and iwamura and expect you togo to the world series with them. maybe we should outsource the steinbreiners to iraq and let them run that country. well i got my 2 pet peeves out of the way.

Cashman should be the one to go, he brings in all these pitchers after their best years are long gone. Look at some of the young talent he has traded away. The failings of the Yankees has little to do with Joe and all to do with the front office decisions being made. How can you fault Torre for not taking that deal, he probably did his best job this year and they want to cut his pay by a third. I say Fire Cashman!!!

could someone tell me how to send a e-mail direct to george steinbrenner and tell him how discusted i am with his decision

The problem with the present team is there is no chemistry between the players. Joe has done his best to create a great atmosphere, but the rest is up to the players. Back when the Yanks were winning championships they didn't have all superstars, they had leaders and a lot of role players. They had Chuck Knoblauch and Scott Brosius and others. You can replace Joe but it is going to hit bottom before it ever goes higher. The question I keep asking is "who are you going to get that is better than Torre?" With you high paid players you better be careful. I've always been a Yankee fan and always will, but the interest just took a major drop. I've been through these low times before and will go through them again in the next years. Thanks Joe you did great.
