September 2007

"Th-th-th-th-That's all, Folks!"

Porky_pigWhat a wild, wacky, weird and downright odd season this has been.  So much promise went into the start of the season, and by late May it looked like we should just pack up the lockers and call it a day.  Then the Yankees decided to play like a major league ballclub, so October for us just won't be the 10th month of the year.  We finished the season on a high note, winning the last 2 games against the Baltimore and hopefully we'll use that momentum behind us to kick some a-s-s in Cleveland.  Sean Henn started the game for us this afternoon, and did quite well considering he only pitched 3 innings.   Normally a starter going 3 innings is a bad thing, but in this case, it was a matter of getting some work in for people, so no one was going to be out there a long time.  Henn pitched 3 innings, Chase Wright pitched 2 innings, Ohlendorf pitched 1.2 innings, Joba came in for one out, Chris Britton pitched 1 inning and Farnsworth pitched the 9th and gave up his obligatory HR when we're up by 7 runs.  Never change, Farnsy....never change.
|
|

10 runs on 14 hits ain't too shabby for a day's work.  Especially when it's the last game of the season and you've already clinched a playoff spot and there's no real incentive to tear the place apart.  Jorge was acting manager for today (keeping with the tradition of having players assume our coaches' roles for the last game of the season) and we did him proud.  Alex went 2-2 with an RBI, bringing his season totals to .314/54/156.  He'll get his hardware in November...hopefully after he gets some in October.  Wilson Betemit went 2-5 with 3 RBI, Alphabits went 2-4  (bringing his average for the year up to .277.  Nice work, Dougie!) and Jose Molina went 3-5.  Another all-around offensive effort from the boys, with every starter save Bobby Abreu getting a hit.  He did his 100th RBI of the year though, so congrats to him for that.  Boston lost....not that it matters, but I like saying that.  So did the Mets.  Hoo-boy.  Lee Ellen, one of my faithful readers and frequent commentors is a Mets fan and she's not the obnoxious "HAHA THE YANKEES SUCK!!!" type, so I feel bad for her that they had to end their season that way.  As for all the a-hole Mets fans out there that rubbed their season in our faces back in May......kiss my @$$.  Good luck to all the teams going to the playoffs and may the best team win (hopefully us)!

Wilson Betemit, Alex, Jose Molina and Alphabits!   Nice way to end the regular season.  :-D

HAHA we won.

Holy sh!t, what an ugly game.  Baltimore is rising quickly on my list of teams for whom a meteor crashing into their stadium would be too kind.  The Orioles will roll over and play dead for everyone but us, or so it seems.  In any event, Torre rested the regulars tonight since it made no difference whether we won or lost, although winning is always preferable to losing.  That said, even with the heavy hitters out of the lineup, they still managed to tack on 11 runs on 14 hits.  The pitching in this game was deplorable....but somehow Andy got the win.  I say somehow, because he gave up 9 runs in 5 innings on 8 hits.  Ordinarily that's a loss, but I guess the baseball Gods felt bad for us and decided to throw us a bone.  Edwar, Villone and Jose Veras were our relief pitchers tonight and they did a good job of keeping the O's from really doing anything big; between the 3 of them, they gave up 1 run on 1 hit in 4 innings.  Not bad, considering.
|
|

Even without Alex (who hit HR #54 last night, sadly in a losing effort), Derek, Johnny Damon and Godzilla, at least we were still able to score.  How, I have no clue.  The night's big hitters were Robbie (2-5, 2 RBI), Shelley Duncan (2-4, 2 RBI), Jason (2-3, RBI) and Melky (1-5, 2 RBI).  It was nice to see this from the B-squaders because at least it shows that if we have to sit some of our regulars, we don't have the equivalent of the KC Royals on the field.  So there's that.  Also, it was great to see everyone participating in this one.  It's still kinda hard to believe that the season is nearly over; it feels like yesterday when it just began.  I'm just grateful that once again, the Yankees have an opportunity to compete for a championship.  We didn't start this season off very well and we didn't start playing like we're supposed to until after the All-Star break, so the fact that we made up as much ground against the Red Sox as we did, is a testament to the talent this team has.  Let the Red Sox enjoy their division championship....the last time they won it, they got swept out in the 1st round.  Granted, the last time the Yankees won the WC was the same year and we all know how that ended.  Can anyone say, "Griffey rounding third?"  Ugh.  I hope we destroy the Indians and then exorcise some demons in the ALCS.  I hope, anyway.  Look at it this way.  At least we're not playing the **** Angels again.  Although....who do you root for in a Boston vs. Anaheim series?  How CAN you root for one of those teams?  That's like getting asked what your preferred method of execution is and then being shown a very dull axe and a sawed-off shotgun.

Why the **** not.  It's not like winning or losing will make much difference.  Give it your all, Sean.

Our B-squad can beat your D-list team.

The Yankees didn't even put the best lineup possible out there, and we still managed to win.  Of course it's the Devil Rays, so we should be able to beat them no matter who we trot out on the field.  It wasn't a barn-burner, offense wise....but it got the job done.  Phil Hughes pitched a great game tonight, going 7 innings, giving up 1 ER and 4 hits while striking out 5.  He looked a lot better tonight control-wise than he has in some of his previous outings AND he went much further into the game as well.  Joba relieved him, pitching in back-to-back games (as Torre said he would do toward the end of the season to prepare him for playoff duty) and he looked really good.  2 Ks and 1 hit and he lowered his ERA to a minuscule 0.38.  Jose Veras relieved him and got the save.  All in all, a very nicely pitched game from our starter and our bullpen.
|
|

Yes, we only scored 3 runs but pay attention to the lineup.  We didn't have Alex, Jorge, Derek, Bobby, Godzilla or Alphabits (our new offensive powerhouse).....so I wasn't expecting a 15 spot.  That said, it was a well-rounded effort.  7 hits, and all but Shelley and Jason got at least one.  So it was spread out pretty evenly.  Johnny Damon and Jose Molina were the stars of the offense, with Johnny going 2-4 with an RBI and Jose Molina going 1-4 with 2 RBI.  And that's all she wrote, as far as the runs are concerned.  Now it's on to the last 3 games of the season against Baltimore (PLEASE SWEEP THEM) and many thanks go to Joe Nathan and the Twins for beating the Red Sox tonight, 5-4.  Now the games back in the East is 2, which means it's still in play.....albeit very unlikely.  How cool would it be if we manage to win it on the last day of the season, though?  Stranger things have happened.

Vindication.

WE'RE GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS!!  Who would have thought that back in May, we'd be able to say that?  ****, even in August it was looking kinda iffy.  I would like to thank the Yankees for making me see that a little faith is never a bad thing.  I hope everyone who gave this team up for dead and never admitted they shouldn't have, chokes on this.  It's not the division, but given a choice between the wild card and watching the playoffs on TV.....I think you know the acceptable answer.  Now it's time for them to show what they're really made of, because they are massive underdogs and most sh!theads will have them getting bounced in the 1st round.  Please let this year be different.

This is a bit of a different game recap tonight....everyone contributed very well to the Yankees winning tonight, from Wang and some members of the pen, to the offense who did to the D'Rays what you're supposed to do to the D'Rays.  Some stand-out performances from the game belong to Johnny Damon (3-6), Derek Jeter (3-5, 2 RBI), Jorge Posada (3-6, 3 RBI), Robbie Cano (2-5, 5 RBI) and Dougie Alphabits (4-5, RBI).  Doug is hitting a scorching .274 now, which is better than most people thought he'd be....and all this is AFTER he came back from the concussion and wrist injury.  Maybe that's what he needed?  Who knows.  I mentioned Wang as one of the stars of the game, and he was; going 6 innings, giving up 7 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks and 6 strike outs.  Chamberlain, Vizcaino and Mo relieved him and both Joba and Mo were great....Viz not so much.  He's complaining of a sore shoulder, so why Torre was pitching him in a blow-out is beyond me.  So this was a great game and a great outcome considering.  On May 30th, we were 21-29 and 14.5 games out of the race.  Since then, we've gone 70-38.  Not too shabby.

EVERYONE!!!!  Congrats on making the post-season for the 13th straight season.  Do us proud.  :-D

Bruney and Karstens are dead to me.

What a sh!tshow.  It's amazing that the one pitcher who was supposed to suck tonight, didn't......Kei Igawa.  You'd have thought HE'D be the one to give up a ton of runs and blow the game, but instead it was our maddening and at-times, completely unreliable bullpen.  Ah, well.  No use getting bitter and angry over this now.  We're still going to the playoffs and that's a far cry from what we could say a few months ago.  Perspective is key.  Shake it off and go get 'em tomorrow.

Match-up for Wednesday:  Coming soon.

Peaceful, Easy Feeling

Hallelujah for a game that ended in 9 innings.  Another extra-innings drama-fest and my poor laptop would have been in pieces.  Also, hallelujah for a game that didn't require 10 different pitchers.  We only needed 3 this time, since Moose went 7 good innings to get his 250th career win.  He gave up 3 runs on 7 hits and struck out 5 while only walking 1.  Maybe something turned in him when he was out of the rotation for those 2 weeks, because the 3 starts he's made since coming back have been very good.  In any event, it's good to see him out there pitching well and feeling confident in himself, because he's a good guy and he's done good for us his entire span here.  Vizcaino relieved him, and really didn't "relieve" so much as he "caused panic and worry" by giving up 2 runs including a HR.  That chopped our lead in half, so we went from leading 7-3 to leading 7-5 and Joba came in to the game as the throngs of Yankees fans were chanting "We Want Joba" and they got just what they asked for.  He went 1 1/3 innings, gave up no hits and struck out 3 to give him his first career save.  I know there's a lot of people that want to see him be Mo's successor when it's time for the Sandman to hang 'em up and I know there's a lot of people that want to see what he can do as a starter, but I will say that he has the potential to literally be the next Mo....he's just that dominant, just like Mo was at his absolute peak.  We'll have to wait and see, but I don't think the Yankees will go wrong with either choice.
|
|

Moose did put us in an early hole, but once we tied the game, we never gave the lead back.  It was great to see the offense rally like that and not do what they are known to do at times; that being just making quick outs and not working the pitcher and taking pitches.  Today was different though, as the Yankees scored 7 runs on 12 hits.  Everyone in the lineup except Alex, Godzilla and Melky got hits today (although Alex walked 3 times), so the offense was spread out a bit.  Robbie went 3-5 with an RBI, Jose Molina (we really need to re-sign this guy for next year) went 3-4 with 3 RBI and Derek went 2-5 with an RBI.  Even Alphabits got an RBI today.  So this was a great game on all fronts for Yankees fans; we win, Red Sox don't....so the lead is back to a paltry 1 1/2 games.  Let's take this series tomorrow.

What an insane, but fun game.

The Yankees never do anything easy.  Another extra-innings game, another ridiculously long game, but unlike last night.....we won this one.  I won't even bother talking about the pitching in this game.  It was f-cking horrendous.  We threw 10 pitchers out there today (and some of those guys could have lasted for more than one batter to alleviate strain on everyone else, but God forbid Torre thinks about that), and that's on top of what most of them pitched last night.  Phil only gave up 3 runs.  The bullpen gave up 8.  That's not good.  So in conclusion, our pitching today = SUCKED.
|
|

While our pitching stunk up the joint, the offense was rather prolific; bringing in 12 runs on 17 hits.  Everyone in the lineup save Bobby, Jason and Robbie got hits today....so there was enough to go around for everyone.  Melky was the game's big winner, tying the game twice and singling in the winning run and going 3-7 with 5 RBI in the process.  Alex also had a huge day, going 4-5 with 3 RBI.  Other Yanks with big games at the plate were Godzilla (3-6, 3 RBI), Jorge (3-5, RBI), and Alphabits (2-2).  Dougie has even raised his average up to a sparkling .257, so good on him.  He's having a renaissance as it were since he's returned from the DL.  Frankly I'm shocked we scored as many runs as we did, seeing as we left 14 on base and both Jason and Godzilla left 5 on a piece.  A win is a win and I'm thankful for each one, but this was just ugly.  I hope the next couple games don't resemble this one.....except for the winning part.

Do what you did during your last two starts.

What a buzzkill.

Ack.  14 innings of that nonsense is 5 innings too long.  If you're going to lose, lose in regulation innings instead of giving fans the false hope you're going to actually win it.  It was great that we were finally able to come back and tie the game, but we screwed up far too many chances early on to win it earlier and in the oodles of extra frames we played.  We go back to 2.5 games out of the division, but there's still a chance we could capture it.  A slight chance given who both teams are playing, but still.  We're still guaranteed to go to the playoffs no matter what, so there's still that.  This is all the recap you're getting because my computer is being a spazztoid and I've tried to write this 5 times already and I'm not going to try and remember the essay-length post I had originally.  Go get 'em next time.

However, it's not really Rocket pitching tomorrow.  He's got a hammy tweak (what else is new this season) and Phil Hughes will be starting in his place.  Kennedy who was supposed to be pitching Monday, will now have his start taken by Clemens.  I'm surprised they haven't updated tomorrow's starters.  Hmm.

Never say die.

Crazy_stein_4The Yankees are not going gently into that good night.  If we have to take the WC then so be it, but we're going to Boston squirm until they shart themselves.  Screw 'em.  Watching Pingleboom give up that granny to Russ Adams was the highlight of the night, since the Yankees' bats took the night off.  We're now 1 game behind the Sox in the loss column.  ONE GAME.  If you told me in late May that by the 2nd week of September we'd be 1 game behind them and poised to take the division title, I'd say you were full of dung.  I'm flat-out amazed at the ground the Yankees have made up, considering the two teams went back and forth all year.  I think we're beyond crotch-kicking distance now.  I think it's "nads going into the butt" distance now.  Moving on to our game, Andy pitched just downright amazing.  Aside from that, he got his 200th win tonight.  So congrats on that, Andy!  We really needed a big game from him, because a sweep would keep pressure on Boston and Detroit.  He went 7.1 innings, gave up 7 hits, 1 run, walked 2 and struck out 4.  Another great performance from this season.  Joba got the one-out hold and Mo made the save dramatic, but he got it anyway.  I hate when he does that.  Great job from our pitching staff tonight and way to FINALLY beat these **** Orioles.
|
|

Unlike last night when the bats were hot, tonight they were arctic chill.  5 hits and 2 runs off an Orioles pitcher not named Bedard is pretty lame, but it's better than losing so we'll take it.  Unfortunately, Alex is mired in a pretty awful slump right now, but it's better he have it now than next month.  He seems to be on one month and then cool the next, so hopefully this means he'll shut up his detractors (he actually has some left) and have a great October.  We got hits from Melky, Derek, Godzilla, Robbie and Alphabits.  Speaking of Dougie....he finally got his batting average up to .250!!  I remember many months ago saying I wanted that to be a goal for him this season and he met it.  Well done.  Aside from the hit, he also had some stellar plays at 1B showing off his flexibility.  There's a reason he has the 3rd highest fielding percentage among first basemen.  Godzilla's hit was a solo shot and the other run came on a wild pitch that scored none other than Alphabits himself.  So while the offense wasn't crackling, at least we got something.

Okay, this won't be easy but if we can get to 1/2 game back.....I might f-cking cry.

Thank you, Eric Gagne.

Wow.  What a great day for baseball.  Yankees win, Red Sox don't.  That Eric Gagne is amazing.  He's like, an embedded Yankee.  That's 4 wins he's personally handed to us.  That's the difference between the division being a lock and the division being thisclose to going buh-bye.  We should add him to the Christmas card list.  The Tigers lost, so now we're 4.5 up in the WC and 2.5 back of the division.  2.5 mothertruckin' games.  Who would have thought when we were down 14.5 games, we'd ever be within crotch-kicking distance of the Red Sox?  I know I didn't.  I'm accepting my crow most greedily.  On to our game though and what a great game from Mike Mussina.  Wow.  Gets win #249 for the career and the offense beats the beaks out of the O's.  Like we should have for most of the dang season.  Anyhow, Mike went 7 innings (remember how last night I said he'd need to go 7 to save the pen?), gave up 3 hits, zero runs, 1 walk and struck out 6.  Just an amazing job from him.  We needed it and we got it.  He looked great and sitting for a couple long innings didn't effect him at all.  Veras and Villone closed it out, and did it quite well...not even allowing a baserunner.  BTW, when the Red Sox/Blue Jays score flashed on the board, the crowd erupted into cheers.  WOO-HOO.
|
|

Hello, offense.  It's good to see you again.  12 runs on 13 hits ain't too shabby.  Everyone did a great job tonight, but big props go to Dougie Mientvjhkvhdkjfhd for proving that you don't have to be good to be effective.  He went 2-4 with 4 RBI.  By far the offensive star of the game.  Other great contributions came from Hideki Matsui (2-5, 3 RBI), Robbie Cano (3-4, 2 RBI) and Melky Cabrera (1-3, 3 RBI).  Notice these aren't necessarily the usual suspects.  When we get great production from the bottom of the lineup, it can take some pressure off the top of the lineup to do all the heavy lifting.  Not much else to say about it.....this was just an all-around great game.  Let's do it again tomorrow.  Same goes for you, Toronto.

Crazy Stein.

Continuing on the path.

I guess we CAN beat the Orioles.  That team has given us trouble all year, for whatever reason.  We're 5-8 against them this year now, and we really shouldn't be.  They're a bad team and when we can beat bad teams, that makes us look bad.  In any event, we got some somewhat decent at times pitching from Phil Hughes and unlike the last few games, had enough offense to off-set whatever it was he gave up.  He went 5.2 innings, gave up 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and struck out 3.  We really need him to go further into games than he has been, because it puts too much of a strain on our bullpen.  We pretty much went through all our big relievers tonight, which means that Moose is going to have to pitch at least 7 innings tomorrow night.  Farnsworth was the only reliever on the mound tonight who crapped the bed, giving up 2 runs in the top of the 9th on 2 hits.  Not good, Nuke.  Not good.  Overall, the pitching was decent.  Like I said, thankfully the offense showed up.
|
|

Tonight's offense looked a lot better, with everyone but Jason getting at least one hit.  Jason only had one actual at-bat though, as he was walked 3 times and hit by a pitch once.  Alphabits even contributed again, giving us a huge 2-run single in the 2nd to tie the game and we never gave back the lead after that.  We also got 2 RBIs from Bobby who went 2-5, Derek also went 2-5 and Jorge went 3-5.  It was good to see some of our big hitters being a part of this win, as some of them have been slumping pretty badly and we need everyone to start getting into it again as October comes around.  8 runs on 13 hits is a pretty good deal.  With this win coupled with Boston/Detroit losing, we're now 3.5 games back of the East, the closest we've been since April 22nd and 3.5 up in the WC standings.  All in all, a great night.

Another game like last time would be great, Mike.

Rocket powered.

Well, the neighbors now know I was watching a baseball game at this ungodly hour of the night.  I also think I broke a table in my room, kicking it against the wall when Clutchy McClutch came waddling to the plate.  Why do games between these two teams have to be so frickin' dramatic?  Can't anything be easy?  Geez.  They're trying to kill the fans.  Mo looked like **** tonight, but fortunately he was un-crappy enough that we pulled out the win.  Joba pitched great tonight as well, but he did give up his first earned run, so RIP 0.00 ERA.  It was fun while it lasted.  The big story pitching-wise was Roger Clemens.  He pitched better than I expected frankly, considering he was coming off not pitching in 2 weeks and having internal bleeding in his elbow.  It was the first time these two (Clemens and McPorkRinds) faced off against each other since Game 7 of the 2001 WS.  Thankfully this game ended differently than that one. ***** Luis Gonzalez. ***** him to ****.  Anyway, Roger's final line was 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K.  Him and Schilling were matching each other pitch for pitch and until the Jeter HR (we'll talk about that later), Schilling was pitching TOO good.  We made him look better than he was, to be honest.  With this win, we take the season series against them 10-8 and if we end up tied with them for the division at the end of the season, we get it.  In the last 12 games we've played against the Sox, we're 9-3.  They really haven't played us well all year, save the first series that our bullpen handed to them since we had leads in every single game and could have swept them.  Not that I dwell on that.  Good job, pitching.
|
|

Our offense was ZIPPO until Jeter put one over the Monster in the 8th inning.  Robbie tied the game with a solo shot in the 5th, but it's not like we were doing much before that.  We only had 7 hits on the day and Alphabits had 2 of them.  Derek had two and then the other 3 were divied up among other players.  And not any of our big hitters, either.  We only left 3 runners on base, but that's because we hardly got on base all night.  So the offense took a snooze.....again.  It didn't show up yesterday and save the miraculous comeback on Friday, it didn't show up until then either.  This really isn't a good time for the offense to take a nap.  It really isn't.  If we want to make the playoffs, no matter how or in what way.....we need to start scoring more runs.  If we don't, but somehow make the playoffs anyway.....we won't last long.

CAN WE BEAT THE ORIOLES THIS TIME, HUH CAN WE?!

You win some, you lose some.

That was a huge letdown, but those things happen sometimes.  No use getting all angry and bitter about it.  Just shake this off and get them tomorrow.  Beckett is a good pitcher, so if you get shut down, why not do so against someone who is good?  Fatty McPorkRinds is pitching tomorrow, so hopefully we can light his backside up but good.  I was really hoping Wang would pitch better, but if anything this shows that Wang must pitch any home games we have in the playoffs because he appears to be **** on the road.  He had a decent record/ERA against the Sox this year too, so it wasn't like last season when he couldn't beat them to save his life.  A few things I was unimpressed about:  1) I dislike how spasmodic our offense can be.  One night we're on, next we're off.  Then we're on, then we're off. 2) Our bullpen, save a couple people.....entirely unreliable.  3) Jason Giambi should not play 1B anymore this season.  If he has a hot bat against that pitcher...make him the DH.  4) Matsui needs to be benched for a couple games.  His slump is horrible and it is killing us.  5) I'm shocked Alex didn't get plunked the inning after Youkilis did (although he dived into that pitch....God only knows why).  Maybe Beckett is getting soft.  6) Derek Jeter will not be SS for many more years.  His range is that of a paraplegic.  It's depressing because too many ground balls are going past him that even league average shortstops can get to.  I bet he'll be the CF or DH by 2009.

Back from the dead.

Now THIS is a baseball game!  Wow.  THE RED SOX BLEW THE GAME!!  AHAHAHAHA.  Sorry.  That was just fantastic.  Down 7-2 in the top of the 8th the Yankees come roaring back to win the game 8-7.  Holy wowie wow wow.  This was the greatest win of the year, bar none.  We had to win, and we did.  I was telling a bunch of people I was watching the game with not to be negative, that we could still come back and win.  Tee-hee.  I think I'm going to watch that game again and fast forward to the 8th inning so I can see the faces in the stands again.  Where to start, where to start.  Pitching.....it sucked.  Andy was not on his game tonight, as evidenced by the massive hole we were in for a good chunk of the game.  The only decent pitching we put out there were Vizcaino and Mo.  Thank God for Mo.  Really.....I'm trying to type this, but my hands are shaking.  Instant Yankees Classic.

Well, we had no offense until the 8th inning!  LOL  Who would have thought that meaningless Giambi HR would start a snowball like that?  BTW, guess who delivered the game-winning hit?  Mr. MVP High Socks Rodriguez, that's who.  Typical, really.  That whole 8th inning was great and each and every run came with no outs.  I'd like to thank Okie-dokie and Papelbon for this victory.  Since we had nothing doing until the 8th inning, let's break it down and use pretty colors at the same time!

|

Top 8th: NY Yankees
- J. Giambi homered to deep right
- R. Cano homered to deep center

- M. Cabrera walked
- J. Damon doubled to left center, M. Cabrera to third
- J. Papelbon relieved H. Okajima
- D. Jeter singled to right, M. Cabrera scored, J. Damon to third
- B. Abreu doubled to deep center, J. Damon and D. Jeter scored, B. Abreu to third on shortstop J. Lugo's throwing error
- A. Rodriguez singled to center, B. Abreu scored

Whose ace gets to 19 first?

You can't win them all.

Well......that was a waste of a great pitching performance.  Ian Pitched really, REALLY well tonight and it's a shame that the offense didn't show up and support him.  However, Burnett looked downright filthy tonight, so it's not like we got shut down by some complete scrub.....which has happened too many times to count this season.  We didn't get blown out either, so I suppose that's some consolation.  Johnny Damon got our sole run, with a solo HR to tie the game in the 6th inning.  We only had 6 hits tonight, which is more than last night at least.  My only beef with this game is the fact that Torre didn't put Mo in the game to pitch the 9th.  I know it's a tie game on the road and all that jazz, but we need to win these games and throwing Tubbo the Beached Whale out there isn't going to get the job done.  ****, Vizcaino could have pitched the 9th at the very least....he looked very good pitching the 8th.  All we need to do now is shake this off and go into Boston feeling positive and confident.  I'd rather lose now than sometime this weekend and riding into Boston on an 8-game winning streak while nice, would just up the chances of us losing badly and we can't afford to do that.  Fall off the horse now, get back up and ride tomorrow.  We can do this.  BTW, did anyone see that sign they had hanging up in the RogersCentre?  "A-Rod We Hate You" or something dignified like that.  That's pure class right there.  Hey, why don't you hate your dumb player who couldn't catch a single pop-up.  I also liked how when Johnny was handing a ball to a fan, the fan handed him a Canadian $20 and he in turn handed that to a random kid.  That was nice.

Kill, maim and destroy.

Seventh Heaven (again)

What a miraculous game.  I was very nervous going into this game because a) Moose was starting and b) McGowan is a good pitcher and good pitchers usually make hay with us.  Moose pitches for the first time in 9 games and starts for the first time in 2 weeks and gives up no runs and 5 hits.  Who would have guessed that was what we were going to get from him?  I was definitely impressed by what I saw from him tonight.  He was hitting 91, which he was not doing his previous starts and his control looked better.  Edwar pitched 1/3 of an inning and got a strike out, Joba pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up 1 hit, 1 unearned run (so he keeps his 0.00 ERA) and struck out 2.  Mo came in for the 4 out save, and got just that.  We got some good pitching out of everyone tonight, unlike say......Al Reyes who gave up a walk-off to Big Poopi....a team the D'Rays should have swept.  God, the Devil Rays are f-cking useless.  Boston has 3 more games against them.  Fabulous!
|
|

I was expecting more from the offense tonight.  4 hits?  That's it?  Weak.  Godzilla got a hit, Jorge got a hit, Robbie got a hit and Melky got a hit.  That's it.  Everyone else did jack squat.  Robbie got a 2-RBI hit, so he was the big offensive player of the game.  This was a really boring game.  No one really did anything.  We left 5 on base, which makes sense because Toronto pitching got 10Ks off us.  I expected the LOB number to be low.  I really hope that tomorrow the offense decides to show up and we get a little more working from the lineup.  Ian Kennedy is pitching and we need and should give him some run support, I would fear him pitching too many innings with the offense stifled.

Crazy Stein.

Canadian bacon is really just ham.

20 games over .500.  Finally.  Joe Torre said that once we got there, he'd believe we were in a pennant race.  It looked shaky in the beginning, mostly because Phil Hughes looked horrible the first 3 innings.  His control was off and after we spotted him a 3-0 lead, he gave back 2 runs in the bottom of the same inning.  He settled down after that and pitched well his last 3 innings, but it wasn't the best we could have gotten out of him.  His line ended up being 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K.  Looks can be deceiving with that line, though.  He got saved with some great defense from Melky and Johnny in the OF.  Melky made a great throw for a force and Johnny had a layed-out catch.  Edwar pitched 2 innings in relief of him, striking out 5 and giving up 2 hits.  Rookie Ross Ohlendorf pitched the 9th and struck out 1.  How many rookie pitchers have we thrown out there this season?  Geez.  I guess that says a lot about the state of our rotation/bullpen this year.  Can't complain too much about the results we got from everyone....a win is a win is a win. |
|

The offense showed up tonight, which was good because with Hughes on the mound, you want to give him as much run support as you can.  The only 0-fers were from Derek, Godzilla and Melky.  Speaking of Hideki, he is in a horrible slump right now.  He just looks like he's never swung a bat before.  I think Jorge should be hitting after Alex...so switch those two.  As for Jorge, he had another great night, going 2-3 with an RBI and 2 walks.  The RBI came on a 3rd inning HR.  Alex went 2-4....no HRs tonight, so his consecutive games with a HR streak ends at 5.  Ah well, there's still time for him to get another one.  We also got a big night from Johnny Damon and Jason Giambi; Johnny going 2-5 with 2 RBI and Jason going 1-3 with a grand slam and that really broke the game open for us and knocked the Jays out for good.  Great job from our heavy hitters.

Another day, another victory.  The Yankees have looked great the last 5 games, and they're doing all the little things they need to do to build a good lead in the WC race, apply a little pressure to Boston and move forward toward the playoffs.  Since we never know what we're going to do against the opposing pitcher, we just need to hope that our guy shuts the opposition down and gives our offense a chance to put up a lead we can hopefully keep.  Wang looked a little shaky today, walking 4 and giving up a bases-clearing double in the 4th to tie the game at 3.  He did pitch 7 innings and strike out 4, only giving up 5 hits....but his control looked off at times.  He got himself out of jams, but this game could have ended a lot differently if not for that.  Farnsworth relieved him for the 8th and pitched great.  The last 2 appearances he's made, he has looked very good.  Mo came in to pitch the 9th, and he pitched very good, save a single and closed the game out.  We got some great pitching from everyone in this series, and that's just what we needed.
|
|

Instead of leading off with what Alex did, how about Jorge Posada?  Geez.  He's just having a phenomenal season and he's a catcher!  He's been part and parcel for why we're in the playoff hunt right now.  He's been so good all year and has come up with some big hits and big plays when we really needed them.  His line for the day was 2-3 with 2 RBI.  Robbie Cano also had a big day, going 2-4 with an RBI, that RBI giving us some insurance in the 8th.  Now.....about that A-Rod.  The opening to the post says "another day, another victory" and describing Alex's game might as well read "another day, another HR".  With his 2-run HR in the 1st inning, Alex now has 52 on the season and the 2 RBIs gives him 140 on the year.  He's 5 home runs behind Ted Williams and Willie McCovey on the all-time list and it's the 3rd time in his career he has homered in 5 straight games.  He went 2-5 with a double, scoring on Jorge's tie-breaking double.  At this point, we should just assume that he's going to hit a HR or two, and just go from there.  It's like April all over again.  Aside from Alex, Robbie and Jorge, no other Yankees had more than 1 hit and we only had 9 on the day anyway.  The other hints went to Wilson Betemit, Johnny Damon and Godzilla.  Hopefully some of the 0-fers from today will get some hits in Toronto.

The wind beneath our wings.

I like beating the Royals.  It's fun.  Especially when we beat them by a lot of runs.  11 runs on 14 hits.  Nice.  What's better, Andy Pettitte pitched a great game before coming out because he didn't really need to keep pitching anymore.  We put up 7 runs in the 6th  inning and Andy had to sit for a long time.  We'll get to that big 6th inning and other offensive pursuits later.  I figured this game would be tough, not because Andy might not be sharp but because we hadn't seen Brian Bannister before and as you know, we haven't fared well this season against pitchers we're seeing for the first time.  Fortunately, Andy was on his game and so was the offense.  Andy went 6.1 innings, gave up 7 hits, 2 runs and struck out 4.  Britton, Bruney and Ramirez relieved him in that order and of the three, only Bruney looked bad.  Overall, a good game from the pitching staff.
|
|

Alex Rodriguez is good at baseball.  Don't know if anyone has caught onto that or not.  He's hit 8 HRs in the last 10 games, 2 of which came tonight.  He came thisclose to hitting #52 tonight as well, but he can always get that one tomorrow.  There have only been 4 Yankees to have a 50 HR season.  Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and now Alex Rodriguez.  He'll be joining them in Monument Park and the HOF in due time.  He's also the first player in AL history to have 50-HR seasons three times.  He also now holds the record for most HRs by a third baseman in a season.  As Sterling said, we've run out of superlatives to describe what he's doing this season.  If he doesn't get the MVP now, regardless of whether or not the Yankees make the playoffs, it'll be a **** travesty.  He wasn't only the player to have a big night tonight, though.  Along with Alex's 2-3, 3 RBI night....Johnny went 3-6 with 2 RBI, Bobby went 2-4 with 2 RBI and Wilson went 2-4 with 3 RBI.    As I noted above, we got 11 runs off 14 hits and we actually had quite a few 0-fers in the lineup; Derek, Godzilla, Jorge, Robbie and Melky all got zip tonight.  Derek left the game in the 5th inning with an apparent knee injury; according to Torre, it's not that good.  He can't move it very well and he won't play tomorrow.  Torre also said that it won't heal until he shuts it down for the season, and they are going to be careful with him while we're in Toronto and playing on turf.  We really can't afford to lose anyone right now.

Crazy Stein.

We got lucky.

We are playing the Royals, right?  I would think that against the Royals, we could muster more than 3 runs.  We left the bases loaded for 3 consecutive innings; this game was closer than it needed to be.  We could have given all our pitchers tonight a larger cushion to work with, but fortunately they were just "on" enough tonight, that a tie or one-run lead was all they needed.  Ian Kennedy didn't really look that good tonight, and I think he got lucky.  A better team would have annihilated him.  He got himself into quite a few jams and was able to work out of them, but I don't know what we're supposed to expect from a kid making his 2nd major league start.  He didn't let the game get out of hand, so that's a good start.  He went 5 innings, gave up 7 runs, walked 3 and struck out 2.  I'd like him to look sharper during his next start.  Kyle Farnsworth relieved him and shockingly threw a perfect inning, striking out 2.  Joba Chamberlain threw 2 scoreless innings after him, preserving his sparking 0.00 ERA and Mo relieved him and was vintage, throwing about 7 pitches.  Nice and efficient.  We lucked out with some great catches in the outfield, otherwise we'd have lost this game.
|
|

I feel like a broken record when saying this, but Alex Rodriguez was the bulk of our offense.  Again.  He went 3-4 with 1 RBI, that RBI coming on his 49th HR of the season.  With that HR he passed Eddie Matthews and Ernie Banks on the all-time list and broke his own record for most HRs by a right-handed Yankee.  He and Melky Cabrera were the only two in the lineup to have more than 1 hit.  Melky went 2-4.  Bobby Abreu did have the go-ahead double, that was very close to being a 2-run HR.  As I mentioned above, we loaded the bases in three consecutive innings and in each of those innings, we did jack squat.  We left 12 on base.  That's unacceptable.  I hope that tomorrow the team decides to be a little more productive.  We have Andy on the mound and the team is notorious for not giving him a lot of run support.  3 runs on 9 hits.....ick.

Alex is like, so not clutch.

I've run out of words to describe Alex Rodriguez.  Spectacular, stupendous, amazing, clutch, other-worldly, Ruthian, exciting, powerful.....Jesus, the thesaurus is exhausted.  As much as Phil Hughes pitched a great game, to me it's really about Alex and his 2 HRs in one inning.  The scoring started with him and it ended with him.  He hit a huge homer to tie the game and give us more offense, and then he capped off that inning with a 2-run shot to the same place he hit the solo shot earlier.  Until Alex's HR started the offense, the only offense we mustered off Jarrod Washburn were 2 hits from Jose Molina, one of which was a HR.  We'll get into that big 7th inning later, but let's talk about Phil Hughes' great start.  We really needed him to come through tonight and help us win this game and he did.  Other than the HR to Ibanez, he looked very good.  He went 6 innings, gave up 5 hits and 2 runs and struck out 6.  Joba relieved him and threw a perfect 7th, Edwar Ramirez relieved him and threw a perfect 8th and Mo relieved him and threw a perfect 9th.  Mo needed the work and with the off-day tomorrow, I can see why Torre put him in that situation.  With this win, we're now 3 games up on Seattle in the wild card race and with Boston currently losing, we could be 6 games out of the division by the end of the night.  Great job!
|
|

Yahoo Sports had a great line to open up their recap of this game:  "Alex Rodriguez had a night befitting legends."  That's pretty much spot on.  He talked his way into the lineup tonight, and aren't we all glad he did.  He didn't want an MRI taken on his ankle because he didn't think it was necessary.  In fact, he looked rather pissed off when he was told he had to have one taken.  He told Torre he wanted to play and Torre said fine, you're DH'ing.  He went 2-3 tonight with 3 RBI, all coming on 2 HRs in the 7th inning.  He passed Mel Ott on the all-time HR list and now he's tied with Ernie Banks (Mr. Cub!) and Eddie Matthews.  He has 48 HRs on the season and 134 RBI.  Whether we end up making the playoffs or not, it would be a crime for Alex not to get the MVP award.  Aside from Mr. High Socks, we really didn't get a lot of offense from the lineup.  I know what you're saying, we scored 10 runs.  We also only got 7 hits and Alex and Jose Molina were the only two players to get more than one.  The bulk of the runs came as a result of walks, productive outs and other stuff like that.  The only hits in that inning were Alex's 2 homers, Derek's double and Melky's single.  That's just 4, (Robbie reached base on an error).  So the box score makes it look like lots of people were doing lots of things, but that wasn't the case this time.  Until Alex's first HR, it looked like we were going to lose 2-1 with only 2 hits to our name.  Washburn had us up against a wall.  I'm not a fan of rather unimpressive pitchers shutting this lineup down.  I hope when we play Kansas City coming up, that doesn't happen.  We should sweep them and I hope we do.

Seattle's Not-so-Best.

This is the correct way to play the Seattle Mariners. Lots of offense, good pitching. Since we're battling with them for the wild card spot, we need to win these games. Going into this game, we were coming off some really crappy performances against Tampa Bay and then yesterday against Seattle, so Wang needed to pitch better than well and he did. 7.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R and 1 K. Like his last outing, he had a higher walk total than I'd like, but he got out of trouble a couple times with some great defensive plays behind him; including Matsui throwing someone out at the plate and a couple really nifty double plays. Matsui's play was really huge because it preserved the 1-0 score and the next batter immediately hit into a DP. Wang came out in the 8th for reasons unknown (both Sterling and Kay speculate something with his finger....which we really don't need right now) [Edit: Turns out that sitting during that long 7th inning caused his back to stiffen up a little bit, and Jorge noticed he wasn't throwing with the same velocity] and Vizcaino relieved him and then promptly gave up 2 runs. He shouldn't have been used in a then-10 run game, but what do we the fans know, right? Britton relieved him and then closed out the game. Now if only we can get timely pitching performances like this all the time, we'd be in better shape.

|

|

Unlike the past few games, we got a nice amount of offense out of the guys, with them scoring 12 runs on 20 hits. Everyone but Godzilla in the starting lineup got at least one hit, two players got 2 hits and 3 players got 4 hits. Even Johnny Damon as a pinch-runner got a hit. As far as the offense is concerned, the HR dominated the offense, with Alex hitting one (and good GOD did he ever hit this thing....5 rows back in the upper-deck in left), Jorge hitting two and Bobby hitting one. Alex's was his 46th of the season and gave him his 131st RBI of the season. Jorge's were #'s 17th and 18th of the season and Bobby's was #16 on the year for him. Alex went 2-4 with 1 RBI, Jorge went 4-4 with 2 RBI, Bobby went 4-5 with 1 RBI, Robbie went 4-5 with 3 RBI and Shelley Duncan went 1-5 but got 2 RBI with a 2-run single in the bottom of the 7th. The game was very tight offensively until the 6th and 7th innings when the Yanks blew the game open. Alex had an injury scare after the M's third baseman fell on his knee/ankle and Alex was writhing on the ground. He stayed in the game and scored on Shelley Duncan's single. Hopefully it's nothing serious and he doesn't have to miss any time. [According to Waldman, Alex rolled his ankle and is going for x-rays, but they don't think it is serious] It was great to see the offense explode like this, I only hope they keep it up tomorrow and give Phil a little boost.

Also, Robbie and Bobby for their great offensive nights!

Happy Labor Day!

Ah yes, the day hard-working Americans get to stay home and do nothing in honor of going to work and making too little money for too much sweat and tears.  The Yankees, much like most of the country, decided to take today off as well.  A show of solidarity, if you will.  The Mariners came into this series having lost 9 in a row, so the law of averages says they are due to win a game....and wouldn't you know, today was it!  All the Yankees were able to muster was one run, and guess who gave us that RBI?  Why, Alex Rodriguez, that's who.  I know, I know....shocking.  Nice to see the MVP keeping us from being shut out......again.  I didn't get to watch this game, as I was busy preparing my house for my family's arrival and the big concert event my sister and I will be enjoying later tonight.  Looking at the box score, I saw that Moose relieved Clemens today.....why didn't Moose just start?  I mean, most people by the start of the game knew that Rocket was dealing with various injuries and this would have been a good game to sit him out and let Moose have a crack.  But I'm not the manager, we let Joe make those kinds of decisions.  Aside from Alex's invaluable contribution, Jorge was the only other Yankee with more than one hit; he also went 2-4.  Nice to see the Yankees rebound from a bad loss to the D'Rays to have a bad loss to the Mariners, a team we're actually fighting over something with.  Good times.
|
|

Apparently, Roger is having an MRI done on his elbow and I hope it's not serious.  We can't afford to be short-armed in the rotation in September.  Moose will more than likely be taking over his next start.  Also, Andy Phillips has a broken bone in his hand and will be out for the rest of the year.  I guess that means Giambi and Betemit will be getting more playing time.  All this happy and fun news couldn't be coming at a worse time, but as most Yankees fans will attest to, this season has been nothing more than bad timing.

How about we win this game.

That was not cool at all.

We just lost 2 out of 3 at home.....to the Devil Rays.  We hit Matsuzaka and Beckett, but couldn't hit Sonnanstine and Hammel.  How is that even possible?  I think part of why we lost, aside from the completely catatonic offense, was the fact that Torre left Andy in too long.  I don't know what the offense would have done had Torre pulled Andy when it was apparent he needed to hit the showers, but maybe they wouldn't have had such a huge hole to climb out of.   I hate the fact that against low-rent teams like the Devil Rays and the Orioles, we couldn't buy a win if we wanted to.  Seattle is on a 9-game losing streak right now and with them as our direct competition for the wild card, we can't afford to drop these games (although the M's are due to win a game sometime).  I just hope we play better against them than we did against the Devil Rays.

I hope he makes his start; there's news that he might not.

I wonder where the league will stand on this, Pt 2.

Okay, so I'm watching the Orioles/Red Sox game, because the outcome affects our team in the standings.  Now as I'm watching, whatever do I see?  I see Clay Buchholz throw a pitch over Kevin Millar's head and it was not 4 ft over his head like Joba's pitches were.....more like 1ft or less.  To recap, this Sox pitcher just did the same thing that Joba Chamberlain did, with a lesser degree of error (pitch was a LOT closer to Millar's head), and he was not ejected from the game.  Nope, not ejected.  Now, this same pitcher hit the third batter he faced in tonight's game; that batter happened to have hit a huge 3-run HR the night before (Nick Markakis).  Smacks of when Bronson Arroyo hit Alex in that infamous fight game for getting the game winning hit the night before.  This is also the game after Kevin Youkilis got hit not once, but twice by Orioles' pitchers.
|
|

Seriously, what the **** is the problem here?  This isn't your run-of-the-mill HBP.  This is a Sox pitcher doing something that was apparently so ghastly, offensive and potentially life-threatening that when a Yankee pitcher did it.....they were suspended for it.  I'd like to see Sox fans railing against this.  I want to see them complaining that since it was sooooooo wrong for Chamberlain to do it, it is soooooooo wrong for Buchholz to do it.  You know, because pitches flying through air near your head is like, dangerous and stuff.  I'd like to see some equity here.  I'd also like to see a unicorn flying through the air with a fairy princess on its back, but I'd have a better shot of seeing that than the first scenario.  I'd lay you 10 to 1 odds they'll whine that it was an accident and that he didn't mean to do it.....but if a Yankees fan uses that line re: Chamberlain, oh we're biased and not seeing it clearly.  I'll be patiently awaiting the league's decision on this matter.

Dramatics not necessary.

I hate when our bullpen decides to make games closer than they need be.  W-T-F was up with Vizcaino?  Geez, dude.  We gave you a 6 run lead.  That should have been enough, no?  Thank God we tacked those runs on in the 7th.  In contrast to the always unpredicatable bullpen, Ian Kennedy had a great debut this afternoon.  7 innings, 5 hits, 3 R (1 ER), 2 BB and 6 Ks.  Not bad at all.  I was expecting far worse, because that's how our season has been all year.  With a performance like that, I think Mussina will end up missing his next start too.  It's sad in a way that he's losing his rotation spot to a rookie, but we need to win these games and Mike just doesn't instill confidence in his abilities anymore.  A pitching note of interest; Juan Salas hit Derek Jeter with a pitch in the 6th inning.  I'll be waiting for the league to issue some kind of punishment to him for that.  Just add his name to a very long list of pitchers who hit Yankees and get no kind of punishment from the league for it.  If it wasn't so f-cking stupid, it would be comical.
|
|

Yesterday, Alex Rodriguez was our sole source of offense.  Today, without his 4 RBIs, we lose this game.  How many times this year have we said that?  He went 3-4 with 4 RBI, two of those coming on a 1st inning HR.  That HR was #45 on the season and he has 129 RBI.  He should get 50 without a problem.  We had 10 hits this afternoon, but they weren't spread out very equably.  Only three players in the lineup had more than 1 hit.  Bobby had 2, Alex had 3 and Andy had 2.  Other than that, the offense was pretty much confined to that which Alex did.  I'd like to see something a little more well-rounded tomorrow, with Andy on the mound.  I'd also like to see some cleaner defense.  It was getting Keystone Cops-like out there toward the end.  Maybe that will be a lesson to Torre; a 6 run lead isn't the same as a blowout.  Don't pull the regulars when a few bad pitches from the bullpen will make you regret doing it.  Let's get Andy to 7-0 for his last 7 starts.
