Scoring runs helps you win games.

The Yankees scored more than 3 runs tonight!  Hooray for run support!  A little over the top, but what do you expect?  Whenever this team manages to score more than 3 runs in any one inning and not blow the lead, it's a big **** deal.  We've done it so infrequently this season.  This game had me a touch worried, seeing as Cairo was getting the start at 1B over Phelps.  I guess grounding into all those DPs gets you benched for a game.  Everyone else on the team should take it as a warning or something.  However, Cairo was surprisingly quite good over there and even contributed with his bat, as well.  So that was one experiment that didn't fail.  Clippard had a pretty decent game, although once again I think Torre pulled him too soon.  He was only at 89 pitches and could have gone at least 6 innings.  Maybe 7 if he was economical.  Another pitching issue I had was Torre using Bruney instead of Henn in the 9th inning.  Bruney should  be used in more high-leverage situations, not garbage time.  And he didn't perform that well, which makes me think that Torre will be less apt to use him when he should.  Farnsworth was typical.  I'd elaborate, but you know what typical means by now.  Mo relieved Bruney and shut the door and the Yankees win 7-3.

Like I said at the top of my post, tonight was a night for offense, with the Yankees smacking 17 hits.  The big offensive contributers tonight were A-Rod, Johnny Damon, Robbie Cano, Bobby Abreu and Miguel Cairo.  Alex alone created 3 of the team's 7 runs.  With his 9th inning HR, he's now 15 away from #500.  Alex also has 50 RBIs now.  Hot ****.  Even better, 3 of our runs came with 2 outs.  That's something I'd like to see continue.  It was nice to see the offense have a night like this, seeing as they are few and far between right now.  We have the ability to do this every night and I hope that "every night" starts with tomorrow's game.  After seeing how well Cairo fared at 1B tonight, I wouldn't mind seeing him there on a more regular basis.  I only hope this wasn't a fluke because our 1B situation is dire if Johnny Damon is learning to play the position to fill in for Phelps every now and again.

Another Star™ goes out to Miguel Cairo, who contributed both with the glove and the bat to help us win tonight.  :-D

I'm not too surprised that Cairo fared well with the glove since he's always had reliable leather, but his two hits raised my eyebrows. A-Rod is having a big year, and hitting the 50 RBI mark this early is great. His home run was a monster shot, no doubt from the crack of the bat. Cano is coming alive, with smarter at-bats and a very sharp bat to get his average to .276, nice. If Damon, Abreu, Matsui and Cano as lefties can keep pounding the ball, the Yankees will make up ground and fast. No more team swoons, please.

I agree about the potential assessment of Bruney. He should be the front-line set-up guy to Mariano. Maybe that's how Torre used him tonight, in that order that is, but 7-2 is no time for him. Then again, he pulled Clippard after 89 pitches, Proctor pitched two innings, Vizcaino pitched yesterday, so Torre maybe used him by default, by backing himself into a corner. But five pitchers in a 7-3 game, with the Yankees well ahead from the 6th on? Bad bullpen use to me, and bad execution from Bruney and Nuke.

Great win though, offense and pitching on the same night? Like getting "Roadhouse" with free popcorn.

We ordinarily don't fare well against lefties, so the fact we hit Buehrle as well as we did was nice to see.

A-Rod's HR was an absolute BOMB. That thing was gone from the word "gone". Yeah it came after we already had a decent lead, but a HR is a HR no matter when it's hit.

Torre is puzzling. Absolutely puzzling. Half the time I think he's either clinically insane or sleeping. Probably both at the same time.

Mocking Patrick Swayze will never get old. LOL

It's a good point about the Yankee and lefties Beth. Historically, Matsui and Abreu have been fine against the, but this season has been a grind when the Yankees have faced lefties. It's a doubly good sign then that all the Yankees' lefties--Damon, Abreu, Matsui, Cano--all had hits, some which were really scalded balls.

I agree about Swayze. Ripping him is like the wind through my tree.

Today's game was good because for once, I really liked that everyone contributed in some way. When I saw in the fourth (was it?) Dye go to third when the rest of the infielders just watching the play (which pisses me off! wake up people, I am a spectator. you are professional baseball players!), I thought this was going to be the start of another dead, lifeless game.
but finally, everything came together:

*decent pitching (Clippard hung in there and battled)

*good defense all around (sparked by Cairo's magnificent job at first - I hope it continues!)

*even simple things like Abreu tagging and being called safe at home (I cringed thinking of another possible blatantly bad call)

*EVERYONE in the lineup got a hit (I think it was sparked by Jeter's beautiful bunt int he sixth that opened the flood gates, which was great since he had been struggling)

*good hits all around, from bunt singles, to booming doubles, a homerun, and a key run-tying RBI by a guy who hasn't played practically at all (Great job Cairo! Coming through!)

Everything just came together... if only now Torre would learn how to manage the bullpen! *sigh*

Good game.

PS - I just can't get over how surprising funny I find ONeil. From him going on about paying for sneakers at Niketown and not paying for lunch (just sit next to Jeter!) HAHA! =)

Is your wife like that wind? Because I can think of a song that would go well with that thought.

Agreed on all those points. This was one of those rare games where everything seemed to be working together. Cairo was the nicest part of this game. If he turns out to be better than Phelps over there, he'll probably end up platooning with Minky when he gets back.

//if only now Torre would learn how to manage the bullpen! *sigh*//

HAHAHAHAHA....Torre managing the bullpen right. That's funny.

I adore Paulie when he calls the games. He is utterly hilarious and he knows his stuff. He was calling the game with Joe tonight and the more I heard him, the more I want him to be our manager. I'm going to campaign for it if that's what it takes.

I can't possibly compare my wife to a part of a Swayze song, any more than I could to part of a Don Johnson song. She's well beyond that. I'd put my characterizations of her in more flattering musical terms--Marvin Gaye, Anita Baker to start.

O'Neill is terrific, and I honestly think that the YES/My 9 broadcasts are better with just the ex-players and without Kay. Leiter isn't bad either; he's very quick with the memory and has a quick wit. He seems to instantly remember things from way back in his career. O'Neill made a great point a few weeks ago about how he saw hitting when he was on as a player, saying that he could instantly recognize on what plane the pitch was coming when he was hitting hot. That has helped me a lot when I've watched hitters like Abreu, Cano, and others chase balls as they've slumped. They probably didn't pick up the ball well out of the pitcher's hand, and probably couldn't read high/low well. O'Neill, just one-of-a-kind.

Im a die hard Red sox fan and I was at tonights Yankees game in chicago. Arod def. hit a moon shot, the ball is still flying through the Windy City. Clippard looks like he has gotten it together after a tough start, he was on all night and had hitters fooled and on their toes. I'm a season ticket holder to the Red Sox and have been since 2000 , I'd like to know what Matsui's average is when i attend games the guy like is a machine at the plate you guys are really lucky to have him.....Now let me take a shot at you for my Sox 11 1/2 , catch the Blue Jays then worry about us........then you can talk ****.......Until then don't tell me about rings and all the past cuz right now when you open your Times or Post all you see in Boston with a - and New York with 11 1/2 in Gb column....

Matty from Boston

Dude seriously telling us what your lead over us igets old quick. We are well aware of the standings so you and every other fan do not have to constantly remind us..... can I say broken record???

And you'll never stop hearing about the rings. Yeah you can open up the times and see how we are so far back.... or you look at a history book and see how there is no team that could compare to how much success and talent we have had. I'm not sure about you but I would rather read a good book about Lou or our dynasty years then pick up that garbage called the Post.

Amen Amber, on both the Yankees and that sleaze-and-screed NY Post (and its owner). The recognition of the rings, history and heritage shouldn't ever be forgotten, and are more significant than mere entertainment value. The Yankees have changed American sports and have done much to connect sports with American culture. Heady stuff, but true. And yes, I think you can certainly say, broken record!

giacoppom, are you trying to start an argument? It's probably not the best place for you to do that, but that's your choice. Just because the box scores and standings show the Red Sox have a good lead doesn't mean we as fans should have an exclusively presentist view, as Amber has rightly said. And isn't it funny how so many of you Red Sox fans say on the one hand that you Yankees fans shouldn't worry about the Red Sox because of the teams' places in the standings, yet constantly on the other hand reference the Yankees on blogs, TV and radio shows, gleefully noting when the Yankees lose. Shouldn't the reverse also be true, that you Red Sox fans shouldn't worry? Ah, but that's where history becomes involved, 1978, 2005. Those just haven't left the collective psyche of "Red Sox Nation," have they? Maybe your demanding us to stay in the present is a way to keep us and yourself from thinking about the past when the Red Sox have collapsed. Who knows? I think that's part of it, as is the fact that collectively, Red Sox fans' identity is as much tied in with the Yankees as with your own team, connected to your team's history of failures and being second-rung to the Yankees, often at the Yankees expense. For that, you're welcome. Thankfully, we Yankees fans aren't saddled with either that ignominious history, or with the irresistible compunction to root for the demise of others before we salute the good work of our own team. We start with our own team first and foremost.

23, 24, 25, 26. Yep, 26 World Championships is quite an accomplishment. Oh yeah, the season is still just 1/3 old, and there's lots of baseball left.

You forgot the Massacre of '06 that send Papi to the hospital.

Indeed, luckyleftie. Though the other referred to the huge in-season comebacks, it's impossible to forget that one, The Burial.

//Now let me take a shot at you for my Sox 11 1/2 , catch the Blue Jays then worry about us........then you can talk ****.......Until then don't tell me about rings and all the past cuz right now when you open your Times or Post all you see in Boston with a - and New York with 11 1/2 in Gb column....//

What in the name of God made you think I wanted this garbage posted here? Let me fill you in on something, "Matty from Boston"......I don't give a good god **** about what you feel about the current standings or any other such nonsense. Your post was just fine and rather good until you decided to tack this manure onto the end of it. I can read baseball standings, I know how far back we are from you right now. I don't need you or anyone else of your ilk coming here to "inform" or "educate" me.

This was classless, tasteless and pointless. I hope you're proud.

Geesh, even I though Matt was being a bit of an ***. Any lead in the AL East is like walking a tightrope ... and the bigger the lead the higher the rope. I can see that some people would prefer a big lead, but all that matters is that your team has one more win then any of the others in your division. It's a long race to the end of the season, and you have to get there with everyone healthy and ready to play hard if you hope to go anywhere in the post season.

A couple good trades can make a big turnaround.
