Panic? Desperation? It's time?
Phil Hughes starts for us Thursday against the Blue Jays. Me personally.......talk about a knee-jerk reaction. Good God. I know we're desperate for pitching right now.....but I don't know if this is the right time for Phil Hughes to come up. It's only April for cryin' out loud. Clemens better be on speed-dial at this point because if this isn't showing the depths of our desperation at this point, I don't know what will. The more I read stuff like this, the more I hear about how Andy Pettitte wants to pitch out the bullpen to help us....the more completely pissed off at Carl Pavano I become.

Beth, I honestly think that this is not a bad move. The only way youll know the kid is ready is by throwing him into the fire.

I'm mixed about how I feel about this. On the one hand, clearly the Yankees lack confidence in Wright, which is too bad after one pretty decent performance and one pretty awful one. Such a move can be a detriment to young pitchers and their confidence--do it now or good-bye. At the same time, they probably feel that it can't hurt. At best, Hughes could perform nearly to what Wang did in 2005. At worst, he could do what Wright and Karstens did last weekend, in which case getting a look at someone new might not be the worst thing. I also doubt that they see this as long-term, but rather a way to find someone more reliable than whom they've fielded, which has been unreliable by any account.
Also, Hughes gives the Yankees an arm cut from a far different cloth than the same-old, mid to high-80s fastball, good off-speed stuff, but too reliant on tight control they can't consistently deliver. Hughes can flat-out sling it, and when he's on has good off-speed stuff. His control has been more spotty this Spring than usual, but he's historically kept the walks low. We'll see which Hughes we get--the hard gunner, or Wild Thing.
On Pavano, no doubt. It's nearly impossible not to be frustrated with Pavano right now. Yet another injury, more wasted time and millions. Sad, and the ripple effects on the Yankees' bullpen and farm system can be laid to a good degree at his doorstep. Pathetic.

While I can completely see where you're coming from, I'd rather we call him up when we are not in such dire straits. That's forcing him to be better than he might be right now for no other reason than we need him to. If we didn't have the problems we were having, and the FO wanted to see how this kid handled pitching in the bigs, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

See, that's the other thing that worries me. We don't know 100% what we're getting and now is not the time to be playing Let's Make A Deal. We can't just say "I'll take what's behind Door #1" without seeing what's behind doors 2 and 3.

He's no ace, but his ability to throw a baseball and eat innings is being sorely missed right now and I hope that whenever he decides to come back, he is more than prepared to do what he is being paid to do [or not do in his case]. Enough is enough. If we need Rocket then so be it, but **** it let's get everyone on the mound first.

I am uncertain how I feel. I understand Felix's point of view and agree, but I also want to err on the side of caution and not get him out there and trying 150% right out of the gate. Obviously our pitching situation is in shambles, as the recently finished game against the Rays proved, so maybe having his arm could help. Like Jason said, he doesn't throw it as soft as some of the other starters and that will be a plus for the entire rotation. First off we need to avoid getting swept against the Rays and that could be tough if Kazmir has some good stuff tomorrrow.
