ALDS Game 1: Jeter PWNS you.

It's October, so that means the little switch inside in Derek Jeter turns on and he starts operating at a level above and beyond other people.  He is a beast, he is a machine, he is the man.  He's our MVP.  What an amazing night for him......5-5 including a VERY important HR in the 8th to give us just a little extra bit of padding.  The man was made for October highlight reels.  I thank the Lord every day that he's on MY team and not someone else's.  If he plays like this for the rest of the playoffs, you'll be seeing me post pictures of him holding that big, gold, shiny trophy in a couple of weeks.  I usually don't get all squee-happy over the players, since I want to be taken seriously for my knowledge of the game and the team, and not because I think Derek is a fine piece of ***......but he's a fine piece of ***.  Who went 5-5 and won Fox's Player of the Game.  HOLLA!

Bobby Abreu also was lights-on tonight, giving us 4 RBIs.  Wang was good, better than I expected seeing as this was his first PS game, but I'd like him to look a little sharper and get more GB outs if we make it to the ALCS.  I'd also like him to be a tad more economical.....we need our starters to go deeper into the game, since it's obvious our pen is weakness #1.  I DO NOT WANT DRAMA IN THE POST SEASON FROM ANYONE IN OUR PEN.  CAPISCE?  GOOD.  We might be able to get away with that playing the Tigers, but if we have to face the A's in the ALCS [should we get that far, of course], that sh*t is going to come back and burn us and burn us bad.  How many times did it happen during the regular season?  Yeah, too many times.

BTW, how many of you Yankee fans watching the game on Fox felt the urge to wish something would strike Joe Buck dead?  I just want to make sure I'm not alone in that.  I really, REALLY hate baseball on Fox.  Joe Buck is an embarrassment to his father.  I think McCarver took one too many backswings to the head as a catcher, because I think he's gone senile.  They are the biumverate of suck.  I hate them.  HATE THEM.

(so good, I just had to post him twice.  :-D)

Now, it takes 11 games to win the World Series.  3 in the ALDS, 4 in the ALCS, 4 in the World Series.  With this win, the Yankees drop their October Magic Number down to 10 and since I did the former Yankees for the regular season one, we'll just go with regular numbers this time around.

Beth, I was hoping that someone would pick up on the banter between Joe Buck and Tim McCarver! I had to put the TV on mute, it got so bad!!! Jeter was a beast, though I thoroughly disagree with him being a 'fine piece of ***. Sorry I cant agree with you on that.

Eh, it was my one girly moment. I have to let the girly-girl in me come out every now and again, you know. ;-D

My girlfriend has already made it quite clear the first chance she gets at Jeter she's marrying him but something tells me she'll be fighting quite a few ladies. it's all good when it comes to our captain. Watching Farnsworth and Proctor pitch is giving me the chills a bit, I sure wish Dotel would have been ready to go as another alternative to those two. Do we even have anyone else in the pen?? Moose on the mound thursday and I hope he gets double the run support from Murderers Row II, Tigers getting tamed on thursday, lets go Yanks.

Bruney, Villone, Proctor, Myers, Farns, Mo. That's the bullpen. Kinda scary, no?

In order to win the whole she-bang, we need 2 things: starters going 7 and lots of offense.

The bullpen is definitely worrisome. In fact, I think it may be the only worry spot. I believe Joe Buck described it as "the soft underbelly of the Yankees." And it's true. As long as the offense scores often and early, we shouldn't have a lot to worry about. But if the offense takes a night off, look out...

I'm trying my best to avoid thinking about that. I really, really am. The lineup tonight is the same as last night, so hopefully we'll give Moose some run support.

The bullpen has been worn fairly thin this year having four relievers going more than 65 innings. Wang was also taken out after 6 2/3 and 93 pitches, I think he could have gotten through the seventh but who knows. Wang's sinker did induce a lot of ground outs, but let's give some credit to the Tigers. Remember that 9 players this year have double-digit taters -they do have some pop in their bats. Aside from the fifth inning, Wang looked pretty sharp.

The bullpen however, looked shaky. Many of the Yankee relievers have difficulty throwing strikes and therefore have a high bb/inning average -not a good sign especially when inheriting baserunners.

Each specialist is a "closer" of some sort. He who pitches the seventh or eighth IS the closer of that particular inning.

I just hope everyone can get on track and give their best performance, no one can ask for anything more. As Mariano Rivera once said, never let a hitter beat you when throwing your second best pitch.

I hope Torre's gang can come up with the "W" tomorrow!

I mentioned if the offense takes a night off...well, they took an afternoon off and bad things happen. Hope the real Randy Johnson shows up tonight. I'll be liveblogging. I hope I'm entertaining.
