Games 89-92: A split is better than nothing.

We started the series against the Blue Jays on the wrong foot, with both Bartolo Colon and Garcia pitching less than optimally. In Colon’s case, giving up 8 runs in the 1st inning is not a good portents of things to come. However in the latter two games, we got phenomenal pitching, with CC notching his 14th win of the season in typical CC fashion (8 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 8 K), and Phil Hughes getting his 1st win of the season after missing all of the 1st half (damn near) with injuries. His final line yesterday was 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, and 5 K. From someone just coming off the DL after 80+ games, who wouldn’t take that?

The offense wasn’t too shabby, though it was overshadowed by the craptacular pitching in the first two games. I hope that our offense and pitching can keep going, as we head into a series against the Rays, who are right behind us in the AL East standings.

LET’S GO YANKEES, LET’S GO!!

CC has really been on it. As of this post, Colon and Garcia have gotten a bit back on track. Colon got the loss, but gave up only one earned run. Logan really messed things up with his pitching and fielding. Fortunately, Gracia combined with the BP for a 4-0 shutout against Shields and the Rays. Phil looks to be better this time out and Soriano appears to be coming back from the DL. I really do not know his place right now since Robertson is really doing a great job holding down the eighth. He truly started to bear down since the second half of last season. Right now I hope they do not try to fix what is not broken. Forget the high salary as a determinant and just keep the combination we have now -unless things start to unravel.

A final note: I just looked at the numbers of the 1927 Yankees. As a team they hit .307 and slugged .489. Leaving out the hitting stats of the pitchers -no DH at the time- the team hit .316 and slugged .511. I just imagine if the league had the DH rule and Bill Dickey came up a year earlier -what could have been!!
