Game 22: There’s the offense.
CC Sabathia had another great game for us so far, and much like his last start, got a ton of offense behind him to secure the win. His final line was 7 IP, 7 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. He did give up three unearned runs however, as our defense got the yips and coughed up a couple of errors. Pendleton came in and pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits and no runs. Great job from the pitching tonight.
Also, great job from the offense. We had a big 5th inning and rather than do nothing after that, we scored more runs later on. Swish had a big night, going 3-4 with 4 RBI. Grandy went 1-3 with 2 RBI, Robbie went 2-4 with an RBI, Gardy went 2-3 with an RBI, and Eduardo Nunez went 2-3. So lots of great offensive production from everyone tonight. I hope we see more of it in our upcoming series with Toronto.

I really feel for CC this year. He has couple of no decisions that could have easily translated to some wins. Some of our hitters are a bit light with the bat thus far. Gardner seems to be pulling out of the slump, Posada however, is another question. I think he really needs to see sometime behind the plate.
Hopefully the Sox continue to lose or at least fall shy of the playoffs by the end of the year.

It’s funny, you’d expect CC to be the one who is almost guaranteed victories, but it seems that other pitchers have benefited from offense when he hasn’t. Same thing would happen to Mike Mussina and Andy Pettitte all the time. They’d get maybe two, three runs tops and the next guy would get 17. Explain that. LOL

They’re not going to play this poorly all year, but damn it if it’s not hilarious to watch in the meantime.

Right now it seems that your pitching has the answers while the hitting sometimes produces the most question marks. Coming out of the Spring, that seemed to be the farthest problem of this squad.
But they might be in the same funk offensively that so many other teams have thrown out this April. Pitching has been the saving grace, with a few timely hits that produced the needed offense to win.
I remember you said the Rays scare, for me it is when the Yankees offense wakes from their slumber with the lumber….

That’s something several people have pointed out, including cartwrightrocks. I think a lot of people assumed the hitting would be fine and the pitching would be suspect, but thus far it’s been the other way around to both the dismay and amusement of many people.

The Rays scare me because they have the kind of lineup that can deceive you. They can go through awful stretches and then just turn around and mash.

The pitching -like the hitting- has been inconsistent. Fortunately, guys like Colon and Garcia have done quite well in the early parts of the season. For the most part, the BP has given up a lot of hit. The only reason why things are not worse is that only 3 dingers have been hit off relievers thus far. We were counting on Hughes this season -now we find him visiting a doctor. Hopefully we can get things worked out. With the departure of Pettitte, this left a big hole for the back end of the rotation. Down the line this may become a big problem.
On the upside, there are 7 hitters with at least 12 rbis to this date and 8 hitters that have crossed the plate 10 times or more; I know the enormous amount of dingers accounts for that fact. At least there is some productivity from everyone and not just one or two players.
A strange note: Carl Pavano signed a $16.5M contract last year. Thus far he is 2-3 with a 5.87 ERA. Is this a pattern?

Maddeningly so, at times. It’s a problem we’ve had for several seasons now, this is hardly a recent phenomenon. Fortunately though, our pitching has been better than our hitting. We’ve actually been getting a lot out of people I didn’t expect much from, so it’s been a welcome sight.

Yes, if you give him money, he will take it and run and do nothing for it. How much money did we waste on that jack@$$? About $40 million? He should be arrested for fraud and grand larceny.
